Have been getting DD 2.6 used to the potty in the evenings ready for serious potty training when I have a week of in April.
When I pick her up from childminder and at weekends when we are home, we strip her off from the waist and she has been really good at going on the potty. Lots of clapping a whooping. She has even managed to bull her leggings down, take of the nappy and wee while we are out of the room.
So we thought we would try her with knickers, took her to the shops, she chose them, but completely freaks when we try to put them on her. She kicks out and gets really stressed.
So we bought some pull ups and she acted the same.
She is quite happy running round half naked.
How can I get her to wear knickers ?

How verbal is she? It might be that they're itchy or bothering her somehow, could you ask her if they hurt, etc? or else it might just be too strange that one pulls things up IYSWIM... does she ever see you putting your knickers on?

I'm having exactly the same problem with my son of the same age. He kicks and screams if I try and put pants on him. We started potty training about a week ago, he's had a few accidents but mostly goes on the potty but only if he's naked. I have tried putting him in jogging bottoms and no pants but he just kept wetting them, maybe I need to persevere with this so he gets the feeling of being wet. I have also bought him an Easter egg and a colouring book and put them in the drawer with his pants and have told him that he can have them when he decides to wear his pants.

DS wouldn't wear pants when we he was training, we just put him in loose trousers for a while until he got the hang of it. Then he was happy to wear pants. Good luck

Thanks All.
She is very vocal and chatty so will try asking her.
I think I will let her go without while training, maybe just put leggings on her when we go out.
I have also bought some knickes in a size bigger as this has also been suggested to me.

We have had a breakthrough this morning, when I asked if he wanted his pants on and his Easter egg he sais yes! Hurrah!!! Bribery worked!

HaveToWearHeels · 22/03/2012 20:34

Great bee we actually tried that today and it worked too. My friend had given me a few toys for DD but we had hidden them away. DH offered her a new toy if she put her knickers on. When I came home from work she came running up to me to show me her knickers, she was so proud. We even went for a walk in the park this afternoon and she had no nappy on, half way round I asked if she wanted a wee, she said yes, so we pulled her leggings & knickers down and she wee'd behind a tree, Yay !

Brilliant! Well done. We've had a nappy free day today too. He will go on the potty when we remind him but I think now the pants and trousers are on he's finding it more difficult so we've got through 4 pairs of trousers! Don't know whether this is a sign he's not ready or if he just needs to get used to it. I feel like we've come too far to go back now - It's all so confusing!

bee I know I think I have read too much, such different opions from friends etc. Some people say once they go nappy free never go back (my CM) but a good book I have read says just do gradually, say 2-3 hour sessions a day that fit around your normal day. Maybe he could just have some pants on and no trousers when indoors ? Might be easier for him to pull up and down ?
