Potty Training for Nearly a Year and Still Not Quite There...Help!

My DS is 3yrs 3months and has been out of nappies for almost a year and is still not reliably clean. He generally knows when a poo or wee is coming and more often than not takes himself to the toilet or asks to be taken. But sometimes he poos in his pants and won't tell us until we notice.

I can't figure out why he still does this. I think it is that he is too engrossed in what he's doing to stop and take himself off. We constantly remind him and ask his if he needs the toilet - invariably he denies that he does, even if he has leaked a bit and I can see him 'dancing'! We react sternly when he dirties himself, make it clear that it's not acceptable. He has to wait while I clean him and he doesn't get his usual treats. Conversely when he goes to the toilet we give him treats and praise.

Is it just a matter of waiting it out? Is there anything else we can try?

Any advice welcome! Thanks

My DD does this with wee's. She's now 4.8 now and finally improving. She's just too engrossed as you say and you can see her dancing about but she keeps holding on until her knickers are slightly damp before running off to the loo.
