Almost potty trained but often WILL NOT sit

Been potty training for 1.5 months now (2nd attempt). DS is 3.2 yrs. It's been a struggle and we've used everything - sticker charts, prizes, chocolate buttons, the works - but he is managing to stay dry most of the time. Trouble is, he is so difficult to get on the potty/toilet to start with. He won't initiate it so it means me/his nursery keeping an eye on him and guessing/noticing when he needs to go. Then we have to persuade him and he can be bloody stubborn and sometimes gets really upset at which point we back off. Often have accidents when he knows he needs a wee but says he doesn't and will not go. When he does go, he's chuffed to bits with himself. Feel we can't stop now as it's been so long it would confuse him to go back to nappies but feel stuck in seventh circle of hell of constant nagging persuading him to go. It's driving me nuts.
Will he ever get it and take himself to potty? Will I be asking him if he needs a wee when he's eighteen? Anyone in a similar situation? Feel we're almost there if we can only crack this.
