DS 2.8 merrily messes on floor - not ready?

Is this normal for day 1?! He knows exactly what the potty/toilet seat is for, speaks very well, etc. He has never said 'I need a wee/poo' and will usually run away from me changing his nappy because he's too busy playing.

Anyway we decided to start to train today - cold turkey, straight into pants. He was very excited about the pants - more so than about the potty I think... For him, it was all about choosing which pants to put on next!

He's had 5 accidents so far today (am in Oz), merrily peeing/pooing as he played, then playing around me while I'm cleaning up. He was so not bothered! He did pee in the potty twice - but only when he was sitting on it for a while as I read to him. As I said, other times, no awareness whatsoever of telling me he needed a wee/poo. I tried to put him on potty at other times but it wasn't right time - then he would do it on the carpet, and didn't seem at all bothered.

So, it's only day 1, and I'm already wondering if we should be doing this. I started mainly cos his mates' mums are trying... and cos we are going on a cruise just before he turns 3! Shall I just stop and wait?

I would give it a few more days and see if anything changes as it does take a while. If not then stop and try again in a month or so

Sounds exactly like our day one - we had 2/3days like that then the successes began to creep in - we are just into week 2 and on some days have more successes than others but other days still not so great but sticking with it as it is improving just not perhaps as quickly as others seem to manage! Equally we tried two months ago and gave up as I just felt she wasnt ready so do what you feel is right - but maybe give yourself 4/5 days before you decide! Good luck

But I feel so frustrated and house-bound! We couldn't go food shopping today... And the amount of cleaning was ridiculous. Maybe it's me that's not ready...!Confused
He was just so oblivious to it all, I was quite surprised that we didn't even have any attempts to reach the potty in time. Just carpet puddles.

We started on Tuesday with DS 2.9. Day 1 was great! He loved his big boy underpants and did all his wees in the potty. Day 2, every wee was on the carpet or settee, which he told me about quite happily then carried on playing. He managed 2 wees in the potty later in the afternoon. Today he refused to use the potty first thing, but then did a wee in it before breakfast. We've had a couple in the potty and a couple on the carpet since then. He's saved his poos for when he has a nappy on at bedtime.

I plan to stick with it for another week (he's back at playgroup 3 mornings next week and they've said they'll remind him and don't mind accidents) so we'll see how he gets on with that.

I feel housebound too CornishMade, did my shopping online yesterday so we could stay in. I'm hoping to take him swimming this afternoon though - I'll put a towel under his bum in the carseat just in case and leave plenty of time for toilet visits.

I could take him to the park... I'd have to put on a swim nappy tho for swim lesson on Sat.
I haven't shopped online here so it would take me hours to set up a full list from scratch - I'd be so busy doing that I wouldn't notice DS pooing all over the house! Grin I'll just wait till DH is home from work and go out by myself.

For some reason I thought he would take to it naturally! My washing machine has been going non-stop!

We'll get there eventually. Are you giving rewards? I have chocolate coins left over from christmas and stickers that I'm using. I was going to use them just for poos because he was already happy weeing in the potty, but I've had to use them for wees too. Hmm

"For some reason I thought he would take to it naturally"
That's pretty much what I thought, naively and foolishly! (PFB) Grin I was of course prepared for mess, but not how much... I just thought we'd have more luck/effort on his part, but he's just not that into trying! Or just not that aware.
