ahh i need to leave the house!

help!
my 2.5 year old has caught on to potty training and as long as we stay near the potty at home there are no accidents.
but how long do i have to stay in the house for?
what is the next stage?...loosing my mind!

Take the potty out with you. Get her to try for a wee before you leave and then just check at regular intervals during your trip if she needs to go and then whip out the potty when needed even if next to car etc. I put a towel on the car seat in case of accidents but I know some people who put an open nappy on the car seat just in case

Take the potty with you. Bed mats good for car seats too.

They don't seem to have confused my dgs. Didn't exist when mine were small, so can't really expand.

No pull ups. Short trips take potty with if necessary. Use on arrival, and before leaving.

I had to take DS1 to pick up DD from school right from day 1. 10 mins in car plus waiting around time. He tried before we left, then in the "big boy toilet in DD's nursery" and then at home.

no to pull ups, spare clothes and a potty. you can get her to try and have a wee before you go out and i put a towel in the pushchair seat or carseat, but you can buy those disposable mat things from boots quite cheaply or even the petshop version! and use one of those?

I got a Kaboose portable potty online. It uses nappies as a liner so you can use any spares you've got then use some cheap nappies if you run out. The car with the door open makes a good screen if you are caught short. Then you've just got to bite the bullet and get out!

No, no pull ups.

We took potty with us everywhere, slung in the boot or on the back of the buggy. We had a lovely supermarket carrier bag with a big POTTY BAG label stuck on it, because otherwise dh would have been guaranteed to use it for shopping.

No to pull ups here too. We always had a potty in the car for when we were out and about and be aware of where all toilets are when you are out and about!

Also be aware of roughly how regularly he needs to go and prompt when you think the next one wee is due to help avoid an accident! Always have a change of clothes and wet wipes with you just in case.

No to pullups or potty! - use the public loos!

Be brave you'll be surprised.

I used to put rolled up towel under buggy if i went shopping for long periods, but nooone ever wet anyway.

Hi,

I put pull ups on over DS pants so he knows what it feels like if he has an accident but we dont get the mess. He has responded very well to the potty and using other 'big boy' toilets in public and in the two weeks we have been training he has only had one accident whilst out at an aunts house where he was too busy playing with the dog to notice. As soon as he had done a wee he told me his bottom was 'soggy' and I changed the pants and nappy. He is also quite happy in the house to have pull ups over pants if he is lazing on his bed watching a DVD during his afternoon rest time. Other than that he is now nappy free and we are thinking of trying overnight in the next few weeks as his nighttime nappy is generally dry in the mornings.

I've just bought a portable potty and training pants which are like fabric pants, but with a bit of padding inside so he can feel wet but it doesn't go through clothes. Can't tell you if it's worked yet as I've not been brave enough to go out yet!

I remember the first trip out I made with my trainee. We were 4-5 days in and I made a mad dash to the shops with DS in pants, only to realise on arriving that I was so pre-occupied with the possibility of an accident that I forgot to take my wallet. We headed home. No accidents. In terms of the anxiety experienced on that trip, I'd say it was roughly on par with leaving the house with a newborn by myself for the first time.

I never stay home bound when training.

Just pack a potty and several pairs of pants and off you go.

Great approach oneofthechildlessones - there's something mania inducing about being stuck indoors with wee wee pants everywhere. It's definitely not normal. And probably not good for the training itself either.

As a nanny and nursery nurse I have trained a large number of children and just tend to do it out and about as

I get bored at home
If the child has siblings it's not fair to keep at home and or the other children may have school commitments etc
I find it silly to train at home with no distractions and the potty always next to the child instead of doing our normal thing and traching the child how to recognise the signs even when they're busy or involved in something.

Ok, I'm going to pick your brain then Oneofthechildlessones!

What do I do with my DS, 2, who is say a month into training, went several days clean and dry only to start wetting his pants a little/not completely several times a day, but only when we are at home? He had a mammoth day last friday where it was like he decided to just do everything in his pants all day long, and we have been edging slowly back to getting dry since then. He stays dry while we are out and will ask for the loo if he needs it. When he's at home he relaxes (or gets lazy) and just does a little in his pants. Or won't go when I suggest it & then does some in his pants. I feel like we have come too far down the road to chuck it all in and get back into nappies. He wears a pull up for nap and and night only. Can you shed any light on this madness?

Ds is having no success at all with it but we went out yesterday and it wasnt as bad as I feared! Took potty, but didn't use it - two accidents. One in a shop where it just soaked his trousers-not much worse than changing a nappy. And the other in toys r us where I mopped up and apologised to the man. He couldn't have been nicer. I guess if id been at a friends house and he'd gone on the sofa I'd have felt bad so I'm going to get some pampers mats. Do you sense my optimism about how quick this process will be?!! . But with spare clothes and potty I really found it the same as nappies.
