My eldest is now 18 months, when is it appropriate to potty train?

I have waitied until 2 1/2 but simply because DS showed no inclination about his habits itr is very very tough even though he is aware still no harm in getting your 18 month old to sit on a potty and see what happens. I wish I had got DS used to it sooner as that has been the major stumbling block.
