At the end of my tether with poos

DS is 4 in March and still has the odd accident with wees which doesn't bother me too much. The problem is with poos.

He was pooing in a potty / toilet as long as we stripped his trousers and pants off. Over Xmas it has all gone haywire and all poos seem to be in his pants or a nappy. The problem is that he is now doing lots of poos again which means we have to wipe him lots which makes him sore. Its all a nightmare. Not sure what to do.

We are going to see the GP tomorrow to see if we can get referred to a paediatrician.

My mum seems to think if we find some type of super nanny for poos this may help.

Not sure what to do. He is a happy boy apart from this. No problems with eating and once he gets to sleep after the whole hassle of poo-ing he is out for the count.

Anyone else been through this?

We simply can't get poos in the toilet at all. Wees are a breeze. Have given DS a load of laculose this weekend and he's still clenching and holding on.

Did anything happen over Christmas that might have put him off?

Not sure maybe a change in diet and routine. It seemed to get worse when he stayed with my mum but could have been a coincidence.

He can do poos in the potty and was quite proficient so he does know how to do it.

Might just be Christmas upset. I'm not surecwhat we are going to do. I think we might have to go back to basics and put him back in pull ups. I see threads where children are still pooing at eight and despair.

I wonder what happened at your mums house; does DS not like the toilet there for some reason, were there visitors who he didn't want to know he needed a poo, did anyone say anything unpleasant about the soiling or insist he use the loo instead of a potty because "he should be at his age"? And yes he could have had different food there which didn't help.

Re the soreness, use moist toilet wipes after the loo roll, and you can get wipes with Bepanthen on for nappy rash which might help after each poo, and are a bit more pleasant for you to apply. I think you can get them in Boots.

Not sure what happened at my mum's it was Xmas and only her and my brother. He is used to both of them btw and has pooed there before.

He is now on laxatives as the gp thinks it is constipation and to go back in 2 weeks if its not better and we can get a referral.

Just an update - we have started a reward chart for trying to do poos and he is now doing some poos in the potty. Well he has done 2 in the last week and he hadn't done any since NYE. With 4 stars in a day he gets to play a computer game with one of us. So he gets some one on one attention.

He also told me yesterday that he likes doing poos in the potty / toilet so who knows what will happen.
