Where do we go from here? Fantastic 1st day, disastrous 2nd day

I've just about survived day 2 of potty training my 26 month old and if I wasn't 6 months pregnant could quite happily down a bottle of wine right now! Yesterday was fantastic, he managed 6 wees and a poo in the toilet and we only had 2 accidents, both in the morning and my fault for not taking him upstairs and sitting him on the loo early enough. I'm kind of following Gina Ford's method and judging by her criteria and yesterday's success I know he's definitely ready, but today he's been a nightmare! 6 wees in the toilet but 8 accidents including a poo, most of which were straight after sitting on the toilet too - v frustrating! He's got a reward chart but is already losing interest in that and even using chocolate as an incentive wasn't enough to keep him motivated this afternoon. I'm just worried he's losing interest in it all as before today he would happily have a wee every time we sat him on the loo. Any ideas how to get us back on track?

If he's asleep, and you're typing - you survived! It's demoralising though isn't it? We had our first day (ok, half day) and had our first accident a full 45 seconds after the first clean pants went on.
Just keep reminding him to tell you if he needs to go & praise him for dry pants and for telling you if he needs to go. It actually sounds like you're doing really well. Chin up.

Thank you! Knew it wasn't going to be easy but still wasn't prepared for this! Oh well no going back now, might as well give it a week and see where we're at then. Good luck with your training!

How are you doing today celery?

I'm so glad it's nap time here! This isn't fun - and I'm getting into the reward smarties myself!

Mmm smarties....!

Pleased to report today's been a million times better, only 2 accidents and one of those was when he was with my husband so I'm blaming him for that one! Reviewed yesterday's events whilst lying in bed last night (not too sad or anything) and decided where I went wrong was not giving him enough attention and spent too much of the day asking him if he needed a wee, rather than me just taking him to the loo. So went old-school today and kept putting him on the toilet every 15 mins, then 30 mins, then 60 mins. I know we've still got a long way to go before he's technically trained and asking to go to the loo himself, but I'm happy to do the prompting if it means keeping him out if nappies and minimal accidents!

Hope your day got better anyway

I went old-school too, the whole 'tell me if you need to go' thing just ended up with wet pants. I still tell him to tell me, but I take him regularly anyway. We had so many accidents I lost count, but also a lot done in the toilet. If he protested that he didn't need it as soon as we got to the loo I just hauled him straight off. I'm amazed at how frequently he pees though. He needs to learn to hold it in a bit.

Right before bed time we had a first - he actually told me he needed to wee. Now I'm pretty sure it was just to extend his bed time, but he did actually wee.

Wow sounds like a breakthrough to me! Max is fine at holding it in, he was going 2 hours by this afternoon, just refuses to tell me if he actually needs one, oh well sure we'll get there in the end!

It's almost the end of another day. I'm tired of asking and he's tired of me telling him to let me know if he needs a wee. Accidents galore today, in the midst of my cleaning up one accident he would do another. I offered plain chocolate instead of smarties and he immediately did a wee, then we ended up in a battle over how big the piece should be. There was wailing and hysteria... and that was just me.

Am I ever going to be able to leave the house again?
