urgent help needed: 22 month old boy asks for potty inconstantly

hi all just after some advice, my ds 22 months will ask for potty and does go wee wee in it but inconstantly. ive tried putting him in big boy pants but he wont ask for potty when wearing them and just wets himself and doesnt seem bothered by it!?! he also wont tell me when he needs a poo and will only do that in his nappy please help as baby number 2 is due in 5 weeks and dont want 2 in nappies if i can help it.

He's very, very little to be doing this!

Mine both were ready at three and a bit.

Kids develop at a certain pace - first they learn to notice when they are weeking, secondly, to notice when they're about to, but don't have enough warning to get to the loo, and lastly they get a bit of warning and are able to hold it till they get there.

This is a natural developmental process and you can't rush it. You're just creating more work for yourself by trying to do without nappies, and making him feel bad too - well hopefully not, if you don't get cross about the inevitable accidents!

Give it more time, he doesn't sound ready yet. Good luck with baby number two x

Even if he was ready to potty train 5 weeks before a new baby is due is too close. Having 2 in nappies will be much easier than trying to feed newborn and supervise a toddler on the potty. I am due in 4 weeks and my 2.8 year old is now independent enough to take herself off, pull pants/trousers off, use the potty, wipe (well apart from 2s!), replace pants and trousers. She trained pretty easily but it has still taken 4 months to get to a point where it will work ok with a newborn.

Don't do it.

Much much easier to have him in nappies when the baby arrives. Once you are all settled you can try potty training but it is much easier when he is still in nappies. You cannot put baby down in the middle of a feed to sort out your DS, and it is very unlikely that he will completely potty train in the next 5 weeks.

Even if he did, lots of children regress slightly with regards to potty training when a new baby comes along, it is an unsettling time for the older child.

If he wants to go for wee on the potty, you could try pull ups during the day.

I agree he is far too young. Forget about it because the more you faff now the longer it will take him. Wait until next summer and try then and ignore anybody who so much as mentions it till then. If he asks for the potty, great, provide it but do not comment, do not stress, do not try to take steps at this point. Potty training a under 2 yr old boy in the middle of winter with a newborn in your arms is total and utter madness. Stop now.

I don't think it is to early to potty train him my daughter is potty trained and she is only 17 months old.Just be persistent as soon as he wakes up put him on the potty after he has a drink and monitor what time of day he has a poo and put him on the potty at that certain time if he does his business then make a fuss of him clapping your hands and saying what a big boy he is try and get him to clap as well if you find he teases you by keep getting up put his favourite program on to distract him. My ds was very similar, knew perfectly how to use the potty from just before he was 2. He was very reliable in the creche but less reliable at home, so I kept him in pull ups for a few months.

With the pull ups he could use the potty when he wanted, and I didn't stress out about accidents.

Agree with others - he's not ready. If there wasn't a baby on the way rm's suggestion might make sense but you're just making extra work for yourself. I think the pull ups idea is a good compromise.

I wouldn't necessarily say that he's not ready or too young - showing good signs and lots of children train at that age (e.g. my DD2), but what I would say is that with a new baby due in 5 weeks now is most DEFINITELY not the right time for you. Believe me (and the others!) who say that two in nappies is way easier than one in nappies and one semi potty trained and having accidents (I have done both). It is also well known that there is often a regression on potty training after a new baby so with such a short time before the next baby is it worth the stress right now??

If I was you I would take the slow route - put him in pull ups and take him for regular trips to the potty, maybe have him bare bottomed or in padded pants when at home and then when the baby is a few months old and everything is a bit more settled then go for it full on into pants and no nappies.

as others have said its perhaps best to wait till the new baby is here, however you don't have to wait that long until after baby is here. My DD2 is a month old and DD1 (23 months) is on day 7 of potty training which has been very successful, possibly because she is getting loads of extra attention which she obviously loves as now she has to share DH and I with DD2, so perhaps best to wait a little longer.
