Potty training

Is DS mocking us? :-)

We've had the potties out for months now, as have the nursery. But DS (3 in Jan) isn't really interested - he will very occasionally sit on a potty, but is up again in 5 seconds. He will tell us when he's done a poo, but always after the event, and has now taken to standing in the bath (at bath time, not randomly Grin) saying "I?m going to do a big wee" and then he?ll do just that!!. So, he must know what the feeling is like when he needs to pee. I don't know what my next step should be. He's my first and I?m clueless to be honest. Any suggestions? Sit him on potty or toilet before bathtime perhaps?

It would be great to get DS trained over Christmas while we have some time off together (best laid plans and all that).

Hi,

DS started potty training when he was just turned 3 - I was hoping he'd just decide 'no more nappies' one day but got to 3 and thought we'd better poke him in the right direction.

Anyway, he got the hang of it quicker being nappy free. Which sounds a little like your DS if he can wee in the bath? So maybe try nappy free time at other times of the day? I found he would still wee in nappies if he had them on with no qualms and without telling us, and if we put pants on him he'd wee in them too - as if he thought it was like a nappy, but gradually he got better at nappy free time. So when we decided to 'go for it' we just did bare bum at home until he'd pretty much got it. Slight regression when we then brought pants in but got there after a few days.

To be fair it took him several weeks to really nail the wee's (and still has quite a few poo accidents 2 mths in Sad) but thought I'd share anyway!

Many thanks Biscuitsandtea I think we are going to try that over Christmas. Whack the heating up and let him go nappy free for most of the day with plenty of potties around and see what happens - he may not get it and in that case, we'll try again later on, but he does sound like your DS in that, if the nappy is there then why does he need to do anything else. Even for poos, he'll mostly tell us after he's done it.

May I ask what you did at night while you were doing this? Did you put your DS in nappies then let him go nappy free again the next day?

Yep - still in nappies at night and he's never questioned it. In fact he's still in nappies at night now, even though most mornings he's dry. We might venture for nappy free at night soon....

And DS stopped napping at a similar time to potty training so if he does nap it tends to be after we've been in the car so he just wears his pants.
