DS is starting school next year and I want to get him out of nappies at night. He has asked too. He is excellent during the day and manages to toilet himself etc. It is at night time we have more difficulty.

At the moment he wears pull ups and some nights he is wet/wets the bed especially when he has a cold. However he goes for several days too when he is dry. I am waiting until he is regularly dry at night but wonder whether this may be a long time coming (DD was dry at night at 2 1/2 after a month of dry nappies so I was very fortunate there).

Looking for suggestions and experience of similar. Many thanks....

You wait. Comparing his wetness/dryness at night to his sister is pointless as all children are different in this. If you find he is dry for a month you could try without the pull-ups. Also daytime training is completely different as the child is concious of what they are doing, whereas at night they wet because they are asleep and unaware of it. You are right that being ill can affect wetting, and also sleeping very deeply due to overtiredness, and emotional issues.

DS needs to be producing a hormone which controls kidney function during sleep, and he needs to develop the awareness while asleep that his bladder is full and he has to wake and go to empty it.

Thanks girlywhirly I feel he is not physically ready although he asks not to have a pull up. He is becoming more aware and getting up in the morning and going to the toilet unaided.

I agree it is pointless comparing as every child is different.

Sounds like it might be worth waiting.....
