Odd weekend. 23mo suddenly trained herself and I'm totally underprepared.

Hi,

Feeling a bit out of my depth. Dd, nearly 2, woke yesterday and asked for the toilet. Apart from a going in her nappy once today during a car journey and she had asked for the toilet but there was nowhere to pull into, she has been dry and used the toilet or potty all weekend. I've dashed out and bought a load of pants but feel otherwise unprepared. We've had a potty in the bathroom for months but she has never paid it much attention before yesterday and always got cross if we tried to put her on it. So what happens now? Do I put her in pants or nappies from now on? Is this a phase and she's likely to regress from time to time?

Has anyone else had a child who has just sorted themselves out like this?

Put her in pants and have wipes and spare clothes on standby when you go out. DD did this but she was a bit older. We've never looked back :)

She's obviously got the bladder etc control if she managed to hold on for the toilet all day so it's unlikely to be a phase. Clever girl :)

She goes to nursery during the week - should I pack her off in pants tomorrow do you think?

My DD was 24 months when she pretty much sorted herself out on the toilet training front. She decided one morning she wanted big girl pants and wanted no more nappies after that. Lucky it was over a long weekend so I had a tiny bit of prep time, but by day three she was at nursery in pants and with her potty and stickers. Didn't look backwards after that and it certainly ended up making my life easier!

DD didn't pt during the night at that time though but didn't want nappies s we bought some reuseable night time nappy pants and used them instead.

IMO you must now put her in pants and keep her in pants.

Often, children are ready, like your DD is now but if you don't act on it, they lose it and then you might have to wait months for her to be ready again.

Definitely send her to nursery in pants.

There's absolutely no reason to think she's have any kind of regression, if she can do it (as she has) she can do it.

Just put lots of pants & changes of clothes in a bag for the first few days at nursery (in case she gets 'too busy' and forgets) and make a bit of a song & dance about what a BIG girl she is now and is using the TOILET, doesn't need nappies etc when you drop her off.

Is she usually dry in the morning or not?

Children need to make a certain hormone before they are able to be dry at night, if she's doing that then I'd go cold turkey. If she's always wet I'd just keep doing whatever you have been doing until now. If she wants to stop wearing them at night, then start by saying she can if she has 5 dry nights. Tell her what she needs to do if she wants a wee in the night (call you/go herself/whatever). Do not lift her in her sleep or wake her to go - you mess with their system doing that.

Thank you PumpkinLantern (don't know how to do bold on my new phone). I'm still bfing her a night so her nappies are usually very heavy in the morning but, interestingly, this morning she woke at 4.30 (vom) having slept that late for the first time in months with a fairly light nappy and asked for the toilet. Think night-training might need to hang on a bit if she carries on calling the shots the way she has been the last few days I might be surprised.

Yes - it does sound like she's calling the shots on this one and tbh I'd let her - she's calling good ones! For now I'd just do whatever you have been doing at night until she says otherwise

Nurseries are great at potty training, so send her in pants tomorrow, but make sure you also send lots of spares (plus trousers/tights/skirts/whatever). They're totally used to dealing with this stage so I wouldn't worry too much. Good for your DD! My DS didn't decide he wanted big boy pants until he was 3.6 and I had a 5-week-old baby as well!
