Chicken Pox and potty training!

My daughter 16mths old has chicken pox with spots in her nappy area. this morning she was clawing at her clothes and nappy so we took them all off. She's since refused to have a nappy on. We've got pants for her as I was going to potty train her at Christmas. She's in pants but has no idea about using the potty.

She's quite good at telling me what she wants and uses sign language for eat/drink/enough etc, but her speech isn't good.

I'm happy to roll with it as my son had Cpox and his spots got infected in his nappy I wouldn't want that to happen with her.

One dirty and numerous wet pants later and it's only 10am. Do I carry on? How long will it take her to grasp?

She is not ready to toilet train, and she is ill - give her a break, the poor little lovey.

If the nappy makes her miserable, then the best you can hope for, really, is to pop her on the potty every 20mins or so in the hope of catching something. You may be lucky and she will start indicating in a day or two, but don't expect anything.

My dd had dreadful spots in and around her vulva. I found a calamine zinc oxide cream, which really seemed to soothe her. Also let her spend plenty of time in a bath with 3-4 tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate and an oats stocking. Let her play with cornflour in the bath. No bubble bath or soap. You can do it several times a day. Once she's better, make sure to wash the bath toys out thoroughly or they will go mouldy from the cornflour and oats.
