Silly potty training question

I have just put DD (2.6) into "big girl" knickers and she is doing very well. But we haven't been very far away from home and normally when she tells me she needs to go we have to dash straight to the toilet to make it on time.

My silly question is, what happens when you go out? And you can't make it to the toilet that quickly because there aren't any around?

DP says to put her in a nappy for those occasions but I would really prefer to ditch the nappies all together if possible.

I know there are those portable potties but they don't seem very practical and I have never spotted a child weeing on one in the park!!

Advice/experience needed please!

My dsx2 wouldn't use the portable potty. In the beginning of pants wearing we didn't go anywhere where the toilet was too far away! Don't put nappies on that will be confusing, although with ds1 on long journeys he did wear one but was told to try not to use it. There are always bushes e.t.c to hide behind! Take several changes of clothes I guess! My 2 did manage to make it to the toilet, but I did feel like I was with a wee bomb that could explode any moment!

Thanks Spanky. It feels like you just swap one thing (nappy changing) for another (rushing to the toilet asap).

And did yours just sit on the big toilets when they were out an about? DD mostly goes on the toilet with one of those special seats that make the seat smaller to fit her bum and she isn't keen on me holding her still on the big toilet without the seat.

For the first couple of weeks I just took the potty with me in a bag. We were lucky in that we never had to use it anywhere public though - always got to a cubicle first!

After a couple of weeks with no accidents I started to "forget" the potty so that I had to help him on the big toilet.

Take the potty with you, a roll of kitchen roll and nappy sacks. Use the kitchen roll to soak up the wee and bag it.

You can buy a portable toilet seat which folds up small enough for a handbag then you can use that in any public loo-its also a good idea to have a travel potty and kitchen roll as above.It doesnt take too long once they have got the idea.

We've taken the travel potty and used it at the side of the road/industrial estate - anywhere required really. And she went behind a tree in the park with her Grandma last week (potty trained at Easter, DD2.7 now).

I used the portable potty that can be used as a potty or a seat.

My dd until recently had a complete phobia about public toilets so if we were out and about at times I had no choice but to discretely use the potty outside. Thankfully using lots of bribery and praise she now uses any toilet with no problems.

I agree with a couple of changes of clothes, wet wipes and kitchen roll. We have all been there so you will find sympathetic mums around you if accidents occur

My portable potty doubles as small toilet seat. I found that the stage of needing to go asap passed quite quickly, and that is the reason you don't often see kids weeing on them. DS1 probably only used his 3 or 4 times, and the last couple were discreetly in a car park.
