anyone come through constant soiling 3-4 yr olds?

hi all,
my dd has had chronic constipation since 1yr old (now nearly 4) but well managed on movicol. however she frequently (3-4 times a day!) soils pants, despite times where she has gone on the toilet for several days.
She has been dry day and night for months.
I have been on other threads and got helpful tips, just wondered if there is anyone out there who had similar situation and it has resolved? It would be great to hear a success story to give me hope! :)

Joining you as would like some hope too! Completely fed up of pooey pants, it's been months. Is your dd still on movicol?

hi, yes she is on 2 a day. i just dont know what else to try! feel like i need hope something will work!

Hi! Didn't mean to post and run, been away so no Internet access!

May be able to offer hope though, we've had a really good poo week! From 4-6 times a day soiling for about a fortnight, we have had NONE and poos in the toilet! One movicol a day to get to this, dd is a happier soul altogether. BUT we have been here before then things totally regressed so not getting hopes up too much!

Btw I have also totally upped the bribery and she is getting ridiculously big "poo prizes" but if it works...!

DS(5) and in reception still soils on average once a day (bad month) but we're down to once every two or three days now. He's not constipated so different scenario, he's been referred because there may be a physical reason. We're also now looking at milk allergy (argh). Anyho...

What has helped DS is a reward chart that is spilt into morning, afternoon and evening. Before he goes to school he chooses a reward he would like for the next day eg take a toy into school or ride scooter to school. The chart goes to school with him and the teachers encourage him to get the reward and give him stickers for each part of the day he's dry. If there's no soiling that day he gets the reward the next day.

He chose his own stickers (cars) so there's lots of positive rewards for him. I'm sure this method would help you guys too.

I just wanted to post to anyone else who has had this soiling problem with their kids as we have finally (fingers crossed) cracked it!!!!!!!
Since i last posted, we had no incidents at all in the last 2 months! It just seemed to be when i managed to calm down as i was very stressed with it all, and i was in a very negative cycle with dd.
I talked to someone who told me it would definitely work to just be more positive, i think i just needed faith to stick with it!
anyway, one day i decided to be mega positive, played nice one on one games/play/time etc and just 'never mind' if soiled, back to our nice time. unbelievably, within 3 days she stopped and hasnt gone back!
i'd done this before but never as 'full on'' and not stuck at it as i'd get so annoyed and despondant when she pooed in pant AGAIN.
so a success story cos i so needed one when i felt it would last forever!

yes we had the same and needed very high dose of movicol to clear the impaction fully and are now on 4 sachets a day for what may be years BUT it works and has transformed our lives totally.

We were having 10 wetting and soiling accidents a day and knock on effect of anger/social issues/low iron levels/poor appetite/focus at school etc etc. The reduction in washing has been fantastic too as has the impact on every family occasion/days out/visits to other peoples houses etc. There is hope.

u said you were having 10 accidents a day but having 4 sachets of movicol a day what consistancy is the poo now?

poo is about 6 on bristol chart now but fantastic result, wetting totally corrected as no pressure on bladder and soiling corrected as long as we follow routines to try on toilet with book after each meal. Have had no accidents at school this term and hence no fighting at school as not being called stinky and even able to focus on some work at school.

Help! Our story is much like those above (thank God we are not alone!). Our 4.5 yr old boy has completely regressed. Ongoing constipation put him off going to the loo, so he started going in his pants. He's been on Movicol for months now, so the constipation is gone, but he's soiling every day. He's now started at school, where the problem is not greatly welcome. Im at my wits' end - bribery and star charts are in full use, but he's now regressed to the point where I am putting him in Dry Nites when we go out. Is this a horrendous mistake? It's certainly not getting at the cause. Could there be a physical problem? Any magic tips?

has he been xrayed for impaction? It can need a huge dose to clear an impaction. my ds weights 30lb and is still on 4 sachets a day (6 months later) just to maintain it once it was all cleared out. A small dose of movicol will not sort route cause if it is impaction.

He's not been xrayed but the GP says there is no sign of impaction (from feeling his tummy). He is certainly managing to poo no problem now (helped by three sachets a day), but the trouble is, he is going away to hide to do it because he is so phobic about the loo (presumably caused by the constipation).

Hopefully that is correct advice tho personally i am unsure if all GPs can reliably feel for it. Based on my experience I would want to be absolutely sure that it is not medical and that is just phobia and then you can work on the phobia. I would not take the word of one GP in this situation as the stigma of school in pullups will become a problem.

My DS had no friends for 2 years at school, was excluded from entire year group parties and had parents asking for him not to be at school for hygeine reasons and was fighting every time he was called stinky and then he was getting in trouble and never explained why he was attacking children. He also did no work.

We are managing to get my DS to sit on the toilet now after every meal with a book and as he loves reading he can be there for ages. They explained to us that routine is vital but it was really hard for us to get him to sit on the toilet. I insist on seeing the poo before we leave the house to be sure we will be safe!

yes and I only know the other parents had complained because I read in his paediatricians medical notes that the head teacher had advised them of these complaints and asked for him to be sent in nappies. I had asked school if there had been complaints as I was getting terrrible vibes from other parents and school denied it to me at the time!!

There have been some other threads on MN about parents complaining about their children having to sit next to stinky children (toileting accidents) and many posters felt it was reasonable for parents to complain to school and ask for their children to be moved as the smell might impact on their learning!! Our school is obviously not alone. Still unsure if they think children with medical problems should be expelled or all put in a special class together.

OP, has your dd been checked for food intolerances? it might be worth keeping a food diary
my little cousin had the same thing and it turned out she was intolerant to dairy and wheat. removal of these from her diet stopped her soiling within a week or so...

the problem was the food was making her constipated, and she was then ending up with "leakage" around the impaction. once her diet was sorted the constipation stopped as did the leakage.
she is now a teenager and can eat dairy and wheat without a problem!
