Swimming nappies (can't work out where else to post this)

Sorry I know this is a potty training thread but I can;t work out where else to put this and as you are all potty training you surely have views on nappies...

My 5mo dd has a swimming costume with a reinforced bum with tight elastic to keep stuff in and the last two times we went swimming she had that over a swim nappy. I've run out of swim nappies though and they are expensive so I just wondered - can I put a normal nappy on underneath or will it explode?

No because the nappy will still get wet and so "full" with no room for absorption. You'll have to go for the swim nappy I think.

my mum took DS1 swimming in a normal nappy once.... it got so heavy that it was practically trailing along the floor Grin
Not a good look - or a nice feel for a baby!!

Do you mean that her cossie has a built in swim nappy(Terry towelling inside) ? If so, you don't need an extra swim nappy.
Failing that you can buy reusable swim nappies (I've used one weekly with dd for nearly a year so they work out pretty economical)
Or you can often get cheap packs of swim nappies from home bargains if you have one of them near you

You can also reuse regular disposable swim nappies a few times so long as there no poo been in them. Just give them a rinse and they're fine to use again...

No, you can't use a normal nappy, it will soak up all the water in the pool & become HUGE! Apparently swim nappies are only designed to hold poo in, not wee - someone at DD1s lessons had tried to save time by getting her DC into his swim kit at home, but he did a wee & it made the car seat all wet!

Also, part of the T&C of our swim instructor using the pool is that all the kiddies use the "double nappy" system, so you might not be allowed to swim if you don't have both on.
