Help! 4 weeks in and still having to prompt every time

Hello I am not sure where I am going wrong and would appreciate some advice. My daughter who is 2 years and 6 months is happy to go on the loo for wees but she does not seem to know when she needs to go. So if I do not prompt regularly then we have wet clothes. Quite often I prompt, she says i don't need a wee, and then we have wet clothes 5 minutes later. Help please!

I've never potty trained a child, but if she's not recognising the need to go, surely she just isn't ready yet?

I'm afraid DS was exactly the same. Could stay dry all day I'd I put him on but would never tell me and would deny the need minutes before an accident. We started training when he was 2yrs and 5months and he has only just got it about a month or so ago. He is 3yrs and 4 months. so it has taken a little under a year. One day it just seemed to click and now he always tells me and puts himself on the toilet. I think he honestly didn't recognise the sensation and nothing I tried to do could help that. Sorry this is not much help or advice but just to let you know its not abnormal and I understand your frustration.

Thanks for the advice. Did you have a break with DS during that year period and go back into nappies or did you stick with it for the whole time? I am debating whether to put DD into nappies again until summer. Thanks

I'd be tempted to gp back to nappies fir a little while then they again

My DS wasn't ready at 2.6 but got it quickly at 2.8 ish .... We also had new DD when he was 2.6 so tbh was probnot best time...

Lots less stress to leave it a which then try when you think theta are ready ....

Don't give up!
The world is far too interesting to bother to go to the loo, there is nothing wrong with having to remind your LO. As for weeing 5 mins after you've asked and they've said NO, well she's had 5 min to think about it and realised they did actually need to go.

For some kids going to the loo just is not high on their list of priorities and you'll just have to keep reminding and praising like crazy when she does it right. Have some toys and books ready so that going to the loo is more fun and maybe she'll get more interested.
Don't undo your good work by giving up, you'll get there in the end.

Any news? I've been watching with interest as DS2 (now 3) is just like your daughter. Will wee/poo on potty when I plonk him there, but will not instigate it or tell me that he needs to go.

We've been at it now since January and no break through yet. Am getting tired of damp pants/trousers, but not sure what else to try.

In Gina Ford's Book (not a big fan of hers, but am desperate) she advocates telling the child it is their responsibility to get to the potty on time. Reward success with smarty and get child to put damp pants in bucket. Has anyone tried this and does it work?

Any advice/experience gratefully received!

Sounds like you're potty timing rather than training. If she doesn't realise that she needs to go, then she's not quite ready yet and it might be worth sticking her back in nappies for a couple of months. Done when a child is physically and emotionally ready, potty training is dead easy.

So glad to hear that other mums are going through the same thing! My DS is 2.7 and we have been 'training' for 4 months! He got the poo thing really quickly so we are there on that front but he still pees on the floor unless I pre-emt and put him on the potty. I am considering putting him back in nappies but feel that we are already part way there.
I felt under such pressure from other people to start to train him when clearly he isn't really ready. He'd much rather pee on the floor and carry on playing with his toys!
Will persevere but good to know others are going through the same thing!
