Well I think for the most part, DS1 has "got it" after a fortnight of potty training. Thought it might be useful to pool tips as it's such a bloomin stressful ordeal but over pretty quickly for most people.

Mine:

  • Have a good amount of nice antibacterial handwash. You're going to be washing your hands a lot. And get yourself some lovely handcream for you to apply at night.
  • In the early days, put a timer on your phone with a comic sound effect - much more interesting to your toddler to listen out for a duck quacking than looking at the clock and saying for the 40th time that day "do you need a wee?" We chose a different sound each day and I lengthened the time between sounds as he was getting the hang of it and we weren't having so many accidents
  • "Who can run to the potty first?" generally made DS get to the bathroom if he was reticent!

Come on, what are your tips?

Try and avoid toys / tv and other distracting things while child is on the potty, I ask DS to 'listen to his willy, is it telling him the wee's are coming' and to 'think about going wees' and to take a deep breath - works every time!

Poo presents from day1 to get past fear of pooing which seems to be really common and a bit scary for them (I used 70p tesco matchbox type cars) brightly wrapped with bows in plain sight :)

If child is getting annoyed at constant Are there any wee's coming questions then lighten the mood, ask if we can check for sneaky wee's that might be hiding from us. DS loves outing those sneaky hidey wee's!

lol @ sneaky hidey wees! We had a chocolate lollypop in the fridge for the first poo - it was in the fridge for 4 months!

I forgot to mention of course the Poo goes to Pooland story - we are still waving goodbye to poo as he goes to pooland!
