Toddler diarrhea

DS1 is nearly 3 and can do the wee thing with no problem. He hasn't had a solid poo for months and doesn't really know he's pooing. I can't see how we can potty train like this...
Any thoughts?

First thing I'd do is take him to the GP to see why he hasn't had a solid poo in months.

He has been to GP, thanks. Is apparenly not uncommon. Toddle diarrhea.

We have the same thing with DS1, who is 3.5 and has been diagnosed with toddler diarrhoea. Bizarrely, though, for the past year he's only done the poos in his nappy at night time. Just as we finish story time he says 'I've done a poo' - then we change his nappy and that's usually it till the morning. He often wakes up with another one.

In some ways it's been kind of convenient, as it means that for the past year he's been out of nappies and dry all day long. But what it means is that if he has a slightly upset tummy (I mean even more than usual) he just poos in his trousers - as he has no experience of what to do in that situation. I'm thinking it's psychological, as even though it's diarrhoea he seems able to hold it in for extended periods of time (can't be comfortable!), so am trying to work out how to tackle that aspect rather than the diarrhoea itself which nothing seems to change.

Now he's starting school in Sept and I'm now actually wondering if we should sort of 'un-potty train' him and go back to nappies altogether for a few months. Maybe if he had a nappy on all the time he'd start to relax and poo in the daytime, and then we could take the step of moving it on to potty/toilet. Is that idea completely barking?

Any thoughts I'd love to hear them. Doesn't seem fair to send him to school in nappies or if he's at risk of pooing everywhere!

I'd be looking to exclude any type of food allergy.
