hi,

DD finally is using the potty (on her own accord). it took as a long long time to get to this point (she is 3.1 Blush ).

however, as soon as we put some underwear etc on, she assumes she is back in her nappies and keeps wetting herself. needless to say we cannot leave the house without nappies either.

anybody else had this problem? any advice?

or do we just have to be more patient?

cheers,
CF

PS: she is also S&L delayed in case this matters.

Firstly, don't blush at 3.1. That's not massively old to be potty training, by any means. My son was 3.5 before he trained. He just wasn't ready beforehand.
I think what you're experiencing is totally normal for a lot of children. A friend's DD certainly did this loads. Perhaps just stick with underwear and remind/take her to the potty very regularly?
FWIW, the absolute best bit of advice I ever got about potty training was this: 'you wouldn't expect them to learn to walk overnight. Treat potty training the same way'. It takes all children time to master toilet training. There's a lot to remember.

thanx - very reassuring answer.

BTW - all kids around me (friends, family) were trained at around 18 month, latest 2. I always READ about children not toilet trained by 3 but it always feels as if my DD is the only one.

She won't be. I promise you that.

Ds1 is PT at the moment, he's 3.1, I know plenty of children who are a similar age and learning to use a potty. I guess you just have to put her in pants and keep reminding her it's not a nappy. That's not fabulous advice I know but keep your patience and know she's really not that late in training.

DD didn't potty train until 3.5. She wasn't ready before then and since learning has barely had an accident.
Many early potty trainers (by no means all) are having accidents for many months afterwards.
At DD's nursery there were still lots of tots still in nappies at 3.

My DS was like this, so we did a week or so going commando in baggy trousers until it clicked then re-introduced pants! He went to nursery with no underwear, they didn't mind!
