Potty training boys - do you have to push it down?

We have a potty and 2 trainer seats we used for DD. DS is only just turned 2 and we certainly aren't thinking about doing training full on, but he's showing an interest and asking to sit on the potty etc. But, when he sits on both the potty and the trainer seat we have to push his willy down as otherwise if he did do anything the wee would just spray everywhere. It feels a bit odd doing it and looks uncomfortable for him too and I don't want to put him off. Is this normal for boys??

Yes it's normal. DS3 is just over 2 years old and has got the hang of putting his willy down himself. They do get it eventually.

It's when they want to stand and pee that is the biggest pain in the arse.

Thanks 5 - DS wants to stand and pee to copy daddy but it's comical to see him trying to stick out his tiny willy over the potty. Friends have had great issues with poos with their DS and they think it's because he won't sit for long enough as they let him stand to pee early on copying his brother, so I'm determined that he will sit. Also not looking forward to the pee all over the place issues that must arise with boys!

Yes, DS is 2.4 and has tried the potty/loo a couple of times but is not really interested at the moment. We just say to him 'Tuck your willy in' and he does himself. It's best to get them doing these things themselves as soon as they can.

The standing and weeing usually comes about a year after they are toilet trained (it has with my boys anyway). I've lost count of the amount of times I've gone to the toilet and sat on a wet toilet seat.
