almost 5yo never woken up dry....

Hi there - some advice/experiences, please...

Our almost 5yo ds has never woken up with a dry nappy. I've always planned to try him in just pants once he has woken up dry a couple of times.... but it hasn't happened yet.

DH thinks he is just wetting because he can and perhaps we should just say "no more nappies"... I am more hesitant to do this in case he can't manage it yet.

What do you think? Give it a crack, or carry on waiting?

Mt DD was waking up with soaking nappies until she was 7. The thing that cracked it for us was a bed alarm. We were amazed it worked so well - it took 1 week to go from soaking nappies to dry knickers. The one we bought was

mine never had dry nappies on waking. We just tried them without and had a few wet beds once or twice, then they just went to use the loo after that.
why not just try, the worst that can happen is that you just get a few wet beds, which you change with minimum fuss, and which will probably clear up within a short period of time.

10% of five year olds wet the bed

bed alarms are not always the answer (BTDT and it work everyone else in the house but not the bedwetter!) and you can get them from enuresis clinics free on NHS anyway (although not normally until after a referral from GP which is normally not before age 7)

if it were me I'd stick to the nappies and not make a big deal over it

good plan to give it a go with no nappies (despite never having dry one!) :) no harm trying, but if he's not ready yet then I'd go back to using them and not make a big deal over it

DS1 is 5 yrs old and never been dry at night yet.
We've tried a few times to go without naappies but it hasnt worked for him yet.
I'm not really bothered aabout it and will probabaly just wait till he grows out of it or is 7 (whichever comes first) and then do something about it like to go the school nurse..

Thank you for the replies. Hmmm... perhaps we will give it a go, and as you say bumpy just not make that big deal of it so it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work out.

I was kind of hoping we'd be able to manage it without getting up in the middle of the night to change bedding etc...

Children can't be dry at night until a hormone kicks in that slows the production of urine when they sleep. All the training in the world won't help if he's not ready physically.

Very common for 5 year olds to be in pull ups at night.

Wait till he's had a few dry nights, then give it a go. Really not worth trying anything until them imo.

you might well not get woken up in the night - our bedwetter doesn't wake up when there's an accident!

DS has only been dry for 3 months and he is 8. We tried without nappies but this didn't help. He has always slept really deeply - even an alarm didn't wake him. Now he stirs when you go into his room at night, so obviously somthing has changed in him physically, and clearly he is waking now when he needs the toilet. I'd try not to worry and certainly don't make an issue of it. Don't blame him for wet nights, or praise him for dry ones, because it's probably not something he can change. He will get there in his own time, although I appreciate what a worry it is.
