He did it!! 10 whole minutes!

[grin] I've been lurking on these threads for a while, looking for tips and advice, nothing has worked. Ds is nearly 2.7 and has refused to sit on a potty or toilet until now (we've ben trying on and off for about a year, not actual training but just sitting him on it) and after his bath this afternoon I sat him on the toilet with his toilet seat, and he sat there reading his number book for 10 minutes! I was so pleased I nearly cried [blush] I'm hoping it's not just a one-off, as I was planning to start potty training next week with the aid of some potty training-type story books from the library. I just know that if we can crack the fear/refusal to sit on the toilet, it'll be quite quick, as he seems to have bowel control, and a fair amount of bladder control. Sorry to appear to be gloating, but I'm so so pleased![grin]

yanbu to be pleased, makes it much easier.

there are some good resources, though to help get them to wee i used cbeebies to get them to sit long enough (ITNG has amazing laxative properties)

thanks Edgar , I'll take a look now. It's a shame that the makers of Humf and Peppa Pig didn't do potty training episodes, we'd have done it long ago! He worships Peppa and Humf; hated brushing his teeth for instance until he watched Peppa and George doing it - and now he can't wait to have the tootbrush!
I'll certainly try ITNG, he loves that too.

i also bought an ITNG branded-potty with tombliboos, though slightly counterproductive as DS wanted to get off to look at the picture.

agree - i'd have loved a short showing Igglepiggle on the potty, especially if he'd been producing a tiddle....DD was most unconvinced that it was the right thing (despite me demonstrating for her - obviously what i think isn't as authoritative as,say, Makka Pakka)...

bribery rewards work well too :) - the tough bit is getting them to do something to reward....

If you are looking for books to help them with the idea of potty training, I would recommend Pirate Pete's Potty. A friend of ours lent it to us and my DS1 loves the book and I think it has really helped him understand the concept of doing poos and wees in potty/toilet! I have seen it in ELC as well. My DS1 is 2.7 and we trained him about three weeks ago and he was had a no-accident day by day 4 and still doing very well! :)
