Can anyone give me the basic points on how to potty train

Or recommend a good book that sets it all out? Mid way through training DS1, 2.6, and he's doing fairly well but I am still not clear on certain points, e.g. how often to take him to the toilet, do we always have to take him or rely on him telling us (which he doesn't always do) etc. I do think he's ready and want to continue but need some help on the key do's and don's. Thanks!
