big loo phobia

Hi ladies,

Regular (ish!) but recently namechanged. Could really use some advice about how to get DS1 (who has just turned 3) to use ?the big loo?. We were incredibly lucky with potty training ? we did it just before he turned 2 and he ?got it? within days?

He can go for a long time without needing to pee but the problem is he has a BIG fear of using a ?big loo? ? or even the little loos at nursery. It has to be at home, it has to be in the potty (and even sometimes when I make sure he uses the potty before we go out or whatever, he grumbles about it ? saying ?I don?t like to go to the loo!? Once he gets in there though, and goes, he?s fine. Recently, when I?ve tried to get him to use the loo anywhere outside of the house (or even potties at friend?s houses) he has a complete meltdown ? screaming, crying, the works?.

I think part of this problem goes back to an episode at nursery last year ? initially he sat down on the potty most of the time but occasionally stood up to pee into the loo ?like daddy?. On one occasion at nursery he was standing up and pee sprayed everywhere ? it REALLY upset him - and since he hasn?t liked to stand up.

I?m not sure what to do as he can?t go on using the potty forever (makes it tough when going out for the day blah blah) and I?m worried that him going so long without using the loo (he can easily go 4/5 hours without a pee!) could be harmful in terms of UTI?s etc. We?ve got a child seat on the loo at home but I wonder if it?s scarier for him to sit? Should I try to get him to stand up to pee first and then other loos wouldn?t feel so scary? Or should I just keep on with trying to sit on the child seat and if so, how? Advice would be much appreciated! xxx

Hi
Sorry I don't have any suggestions for you but just wanted to say I too have a child who has a big loo phobia! My dd is 3.5 and will only go on the potty at home, she refuses to go on the big loo and has a real fear of public toilets. We have a potette which we have to take on trips out but she is getting a bit big now to sit squatting over a travel potty in broad daylight!

Just wanted to post to let you know that you're not the only one!

Hiya

I wondered if you'd made any progress on this.
We're just finished day 3 training with DS and I'm also worried he's developing a fear.
However, his fear is going categorically and he'll hold in it for hours!

Thx

Mads
