Potty training & nursery

hi, my DD is 2 1/2 and is starting to show interest. Yesterday she was very excited about charts and pants and she managed half a wee in the potty but the rest was in her pants and she also poo-ed herself. We didn't make a big deal of it obviously but now not sure how to be consistant as she is in full time nursery mon, tues, thurs and fri. Any advice? Should i try in the evening and the weekends?

A good nursery should pick up where you left off at home if you brief them - but it sounds like she maybe isn't ready yet so it might be a little stressful for her to go nappy-less at nursery.

You can take a potty and the star chart into nursery (plus loads of clothes obviously!) You might find pullups are a good idea for a while - they can encourage her to pull them down and try for a wee, but it's not such a faff changing her every ten minutes.

Alternatively you might prefer to just keep trying at home until she's got more of a hang of it.

My DS2 is 20 months and uses the potty in the evenings and weekends and basically whenever he's got his nappy off, but I don't worry when we're out and about, or at his childminder. I'll probably continue this way for a few months and then try a complete switch to pants and see if it works out.

Final option - you could take a week off at some point in the future and really go for it at home and see if it works. Some nurseries have regular potty training sessions once a year for all the children past a certain age, so that everyone gets reminded to try etc at the same time.

Have a chat to your nursery and see what they think.

DD is in nursery full days Mon-Weds and we potty trained her a couple of months ago (she's 2.5) We spoke to nursery first to let them know what was going on, and started on a Friday as it is the day I'm home. Nursery just continued on the Monday and we took one of her pottys in to start with (she now goes on the toilet there). She had one or two more accidents at nursery than at home but it was pretty stress free.

I would recommend talking to your nursery and doing it in conjunction with them. Potty training probably takes a couple of weeks and I think once you start you need to do it full time. If you are just doing evenings and weekends on potty/in knickers and then swtiching to nappies it's going to get a bit confusing for your DD.

I think nursery helped DD as she saw other children potty training and wanted to wear knickers and go in potty/toilet like them. She initiated potty training herself - kept asking for kinckers and refusing to wear nappy - and have to admit I would've been happy to wait but it was actually fine.

My DS nursery have been brill. we just went for it. They were happy to change his clothes etc and it worked really well. Took a while, but always does when you arent with them all the time.... it helped with trying to be consistent!

Sadly it just means there are twice the number of trousers to wash!!!
