2nd day of potty training - Advice needed!

Dd1 is 27mo. I started potty training her yesterday after talking to her about it for a few weeks.

Yesterday she only had one accident and did both wees and poos on her potty. Today we have had loads of accidents (which I had expected)

She doesnt ask to use the potty I have to prompt her. Is it best to continue and let her learn when she needs to go? Have I tried her too early?

It differs from child to child, but 27 months should be ok.

It will differ from day to day so don't worry about that. At first I would advise you to get her to sit on the potty if you think she needs to go (quite frequently at first). After a couple of days you can start asking if she needs to go, still prompting, but if she says no, then leave her. Ask her frequently at first (every 10mins if necessary!) and then less often (every hour then every couple of hours and so on). Over the next week or so you asking her will give way to her telling you. I've used this method with all the kids i've looked after and it's worked every time, should be clean and dry within two weeks (hopefully less!).

Don't be disheartened if you have a bad day and unless you have to don't give up beacuse the more you stop and start the harder it is!

If she seems quite happy stick with it a bit longer - it can take several days of accidents for the idea to sink in.
I tried with my DD at about the same age, persevered for about 4 days but she got upset and bothered. Left it, put her back into nappies and took a gentler tack a few months later - this worked better for her and she finally was doing wees from about 3 years but it took a couple more months to persuade her to do her poos in the potty too. Very few accidents since though - maybe only 3 or 4 in total.

I think we have cracked it today. She doesnt to poo on it but Im going to push for that. Im just so pleased that she is getting to understand when she needs to go

Thats great - well done to both of you. I think a lot of babies take a bit longer to potty train for poos, I had a chat with the staff at the nursery and they said many of the children who were happily using the potty for wees would not poo at nursery.

DD used to save them up for nightime and do them in her nappy (which was a real PITA) but they all get there in the end.

Well done! That's great. Poo's often take a bit longer. I potty trained one little girl who mastered weeing in the potty in 4 days, but was terrified of pooing in the potty. She had to have me and her mum holding her hands and coaching her through the first few times!

I'm on day 6 with DD. First couple of days ok, then on day 4 lots of accidents no successes. I introduced a star chart which she is semi ok with. I also let her watch Elmo's potty time. I bought it ages ago but never watched it. I wasn't going to show it to her because I am training straight to the loo and thought it might confuse her but I was desperate as she was refusing to go to loo at all ("no!loo finished now!"). It is brilliant! She watched it over and over and before the first time was finished she told me she needed to go. I needed to see it too, because it made me relax about accidents. Now when we have an accident I sing their little accident song! I had been trying not to get cross but it's not easy when you've run through all the pants you bought! I recommend it for a few days in, as it renews both your enthusiasms for the process.

I think as that as long as they are having some successes then stick at it. It is normal to regress after being dry for a while too so don't be disheartened if this happens- it's really common.

Well, she has been fantastic!! She hasnt had an accident since Wednesday (touch wood!)

She did a wee on the toilet, she is pooing in the potty and is just going off on her to use the potty.

I am amazed! Im so so proud of her. I really thought I was going to have a battle on my hands but she has been amazing! I hope it continues but I am expecting a few accidents at some point.

I keep going on about how good she is to every one I see now!!! Good luck to everyone else.
