Nursery wants to train, I'm not sure

DD is about to move up to the toddler room in nursery, she's 20 months and will probably be there for a year. I was asked if we'd be happy to support their efforts potty training from when she starts in 2 weeks and said "Erm yes I guess so". It's not something we're thinking about yet, however, so can I say to them Actually no, we'll do it when she's ready?

There's certainly no awareness of when she's going to wee or poo, she tells us when she has but that's very different to being able to say I need to go to the potty now. As far as I could tell, it's mostly about showing the kids the potty and observing that the older ones in the room, but I don't want there to be any pressure on her if she's not ready yet.

Of course you can say no, she's your child. 20 months is still quite young.

I would be tempted to ask them not to bother. Trying to early makes it stressful for everyone. Especially your DD.

That's what I thought - the lady was keen to point out that they learn lots from each other at this age, but I'm sure that can't extend to knowing when you need a wee!

I agree JJ. My DD is 2.7 and nursery have nudged me about training. Despite lots of her little friends being trained and easily too by the sound of it, my DD is not ready - she has all the chat but none of the action. She'd be happy in a dirty nappy all day if she got half the chance. I am waiting until she is ready as I want the whole process to be as stress free as possible for all concerned. But I do now 20mo who seemed to get it and get it quick, I think it really depends on the DC.

Well its your call, you could let them try for a couple of weeks, and if she is showing no interest, and does not appear to understand than you could tell them to stop and wait until a later time.

My niece is 21 months and is potty training, but she is ready she actually let her mum know when she needed to go and her mum takes her cues.
