Why has my son regressed?

He is 3y4m. After many false starts, he's been toilet trained since early June - early June was when he started realising he needed to go, and mid June was the first time we were out and he told me he needed a poo.
He seemed to get it really quickly, probably because of his age, and barring the odd few accidents when he was tired or very grumpy we'd had no problems.
Until a week ago. He came back from nursery and had 2 accidents before bedtime. We just assumed he was tired, but that has continued ever since. He is now completely not using the toilet at home, unless we prompt him, which we only do before bed or if we're about to go out. When he's out and about he's fine as usual, we probably prompt him more but there have been times while out that he's told us.
What on earth is going on?

He wanted his Lightning McQueen pants on and I'm afraid to say I told him if he weed in them they'd be going in the bin and he'd be going back into nappies.
I can see 2 ways to go:

• Make no fuss at all (assuming he's doing it for attention) just treat it as though we're toilet training for the first time again
• Tell him he only has a few pairs of big boys pants left so if he wees or poos in them all he'll have to wear nappies.

I actually think the second may work...

My DS is 3y10m and has been sort of potty trained since christmas. I say sort of because we have one continuous problem. He will poo in his pants 80% of the time if given the opportunity. If he is in is PJ'w with no pants on he will use his little musical toilet or if he is running around the house naked but if he knows he has got pants on (even his chosen favourites) he will do it in then

I dont understand where this is all coming from because when it comes to weeing, his bladder is much stronger than mine!!! I think we have one acccident since christmas when he was poorly and that is it. He has gone from wearing nappies for bed at christmas - to nothing at all and is happy to get up in the night if need be and go and use the toilet (for a stand up wee) himself.

It is all so frustarting and he is starting half days at school next monday, so I don't know what he is going to do if he does need to go then

I was going to post about a similar thing with DD (28mo). She was doing so well for about a month - had been dry at night for a week etc - and then suddenly wet the bed twice in one day, once first thing in the morning and again at naptime.

Also had a number accidents which ordinarily would not have happened - once at home when playing with her Dad and once at my sister's house when I had told her to come and find me if she needed a wee and shown her where the potty was etc. The last one I did get cross with her as she was awake first thing and instead of asking for the potty just did the wee in her cot. I talked to her quite firmly about it and how it was much better to tell me before we had any more accidents and I would come and help her.

This morning the first thing I heard was, 'Mummy I need a wee'. I was out of bed so fast I nearly got whiplash!

I wondered if she had got bored or complacent. Or if she feels so relaxed with it that she isn't paying as much attention. My Mum thinks I am expecting too much but DD obviously understands what I am saying and knows that it is better to avoid accidents and finger crossed she will tell me from now on.

I did ask her if she wanted to wear nappies again and she said no, but personally I was determined that wasn't going to happen.

If she hadn't got any better I was going to bring her bedtime milk forward and more regularly sit her on the potty during the day.

Sorry I can't be more help but I am sure it is quite a common problem.

I've got a very similar thing going on with my DD (2.12). She's been out of nappies for quite a while but now seems to fairly regularly wee a little bit and then say she wants the toilet. I think it's because she's realised that she can wait a bit before she needs to go but is waiting too long. She doesn't want to interrupt whatever she's doing to go to the loo.

I've taken the "do I need to put you back in nappies?" approach (she would be horrified) but it's having limited success. I've gone back to excessive praise for her not wetting a bit first. Again with limited success but I live in hope.

Yes we have got quite cross with him, but he's pretty much ignoring it :(

Wondering whether bribery is the answer, but then I feel we are rewarding him for being naughty/lazy - which I think he is in this case

I'm dreading my DD going back into pull-ups but we may have to go down that route... I usually tell her that she'll have to go back in the Toddler Room at nursery (she is very proud to be a big girl now and in the Children's House) but this will be of no use once she's back at nursery from 6th Sept as she'll be in Children's House all the time and will twig that she won't be moved.

I do think this is normal but I definitely think that it's laziness/lack of thought of consequences rather than not knowing they need to go. Very frustrating.

I had a similar problem with ds1. we didnt put him back in nappies/pull ups but used a sticker chart. He had a sticker every time he used the toilet without being asked, but nothing (positive or negative) if he had an accident, then if he had 3 0r more stickers in a day he could watch his fav tv programme ( or just no accidents). It took a while , and he was still having the odd accident when he started school, but he is 5 now and no problems. I think going back in nappies can confuse them so it may be worht sticking it out, if you can bear it

missmapp, what I coincidence - I got fed up so printed out a sticker chart. Within 10 mins of having told hom what was going to happen he "needed a wee"
hopefully this will snap him out of it

my ds (3) has been potty trained mostly since april, but every now and again he will start having lots of accidents, but then goes back to being trained again just as quickly.
I dont know what causes it, although he does have ASD so i knew toilet training wouldnt necessarily be a simple affair.
I dont think putting him back in nappies is a great idea though
