DS1's potty training is going well, but what do you do when you are out and about ?

i.e. if I go to the library with DS1 and DS2 (5 months) and DS1 wants to go to the toilet.

Assuming he will actually go on a potty (which he won't so far, only on a toilet). Do you use the potty in the library, on the street outside, or try and get him somewhere a little private, all the while he is screaming and telling me he needs to pee.

Or - if he continues to refuse to use the potty, do I not leave home unless I know where the nearest toilets are - also - what on earth do I do with DS2, while taking DS1 into the public toilet?

I am a bit stressed about all this - as you may be able to tell. Please advise!

Most public places will have toilets, you could take a portable potty with you, but if he can hold it for a certain amount of time you probably won't need it.

Before you leave take him to the toilet 'to try' when you get to your destination check out where the toilets are, tell ds that he needs to tell you when he needs the loo, if he hasn't said he needs a wee and you think it has been a while take him 'to try' again.

Before you leave take him to the toilet, depending on when the last time he went.

As he develops he will become more aware of the feeling of needing to go to the toilet and will confidently tell you when he needs to go.

Oooh, i also remember on a trip to a farm the children were playing in the soft play, when a little voiced popped up i need a wee, so we gathered all the children together (day nursery outing) and organised who would take the potty training children to the loo, it was a bit of a trek to the toilets, so we popped a nappy on in case who couldn't hold it, all in all it probably took him 20 mins to actually get to the toilet and the nappy was dry. That was probably a month into his particular training. So they can learn to hold it quite quickly.

cookielove, Well thats very reassuring about managing to wait 20 mins.

DS1 is now very good at telling me when he needs to pee, what I am worried about it when he does that - he won't use a portable potty at the moment, but if he does - do you just get it out in the shop/library/street?

Also, very hard to take DS1 to a public loo while managing DS2 and the buggy etc.

Plus worried about how far away public loos might be?

I'm speaking from a nursery worker point of view, i know i wouldn't be comfortable with putting the children on a potty in public, unless in the confines of a toilet, or in a more secluded area, iyswim.

What you could try is when your at home, when he says he needs to go, delaying a bit at time before taking him, i'm not saying alot 30's, then a min, so he gets use to it, then at least when your out you have a bit of lee-way.

You could take a portable potty, i have seen many people whip it out where ever, when i nanny'd i did use one in the middle of a park.

When using public loo's i would take him in a disabled loo, you should be able to fit the buggy in and lock the door, in most of these, or use a normal loo, and back yourself into the toliet, so the buggy blocks the door.

have him go before you go out and at the destination.
we never used a potty but those toddler loo seats, you can get a foldable version to take along with you.
