Time to go back to nappies?

DS is 2.6
Was showing all the right signs of being ready to potty train so we started 2 weeks ago and went into pants, which he loves wearing.

Day one we had 2 wet accidents and day 2, none at all!! Over the last 2 weeks, he seemed to really get the hang of going to the toilet/potty for a wee.

However, he has not yet had a poo on the toilet/potty - he either does it in his pants or in his night nappy; how do they get the hang of this?

Also, in the last 3 days, he has had several 2-3 wet accidents each day (at nursery) and a couple at home. Nursery say he is probably just too distracted to go but I'm wondering whether we were just lucky in the first week and a half and he's actually not ready at all?

We were going to see how he faired over the weekend but I would appreciate any tips, stories and advice?

YOu will mostly get advice to keep going. This is what I did with ds1. Wrong decision. He had problems for years. He held his poo in until about the age of 7 and it would leak out. He started to hold his poo in when we tried to train him so that he didn't have to use the potty. Wee was fine.

With dd we started and like you there were problems in the first couple of days. In her case she held in her wee for 24 hrs at a time. I thought sod this and went back to nappies for about 6-9 months and when I finally tried again she was trained in 1 day. I will do the same with ds2. If it doesn't seem to be working I will stop. I am pretty sure I will be the only one saying this.

We've got this with ds 2.11 and made decision today to go back to nappy. 2 weeks of dry during day and nearly during night but only doing poos in night nappy or pants.

Last 3 days is likew he can't be bothered, will wet himself whilst playing next to potty after just being asked if he wants a wee.

Will wait until he's more motivated

Same here ... My ds has been so interested for months and I thought he was a bit young (22months) but finally gave in 2 weeks ago. With great success for 8 days ! Wee's and poo's in the toilet (refusal of potty from day 1) -but now he just goes willy nilly - if it suits him or not... if asked he always says no he doesnt need one! Some times he goes on his own account or just pulls his big by pants (which he loves) down and wee's on the doormat or on the floor. They only thing that is consistent is the poos - they all go in the toilet so far.
Not sure what to do. His sister is still in nappies - so I asked him today, when he "helped" me change her if he wanted to wear nappies again too - and I got a NO.
So I have started the dreaded bribery but that doesnt seem to make a difference either as he isnt really interested in the choc buttons half the time....
i think i will give it a "wee" while longer ....

My DD was great about wee's but rubbish about poo's for ages. I mastered it by promising to buy her a scooter if she started pooing on the loo. When she did do it, I made a huge huge fuss and gave her the scooter of course Friends used a DVD as bribery for theirs and took it away if they had a poo accident and returned it once they started pooing on the loo again Desperate times desperate measures? Tis a bit hardcore though isn't it?

Even now if she gets too engrossed in playing she can have a wee accident but she never ever poo's in her knickers now, she much prefers the loo. She's still in pull ups for naps though.

I wouldn't give up yet, it sounds promising, there will always good and bad days unfortunately.

I bought one of these as well. You probably have one already my DD felt safer and more secure on it than the alternatives available. However I keep a potty in the car for on-the-go.

Every child, unfortunately or not, is different. From my own experience with both my dd and ds, I'd say persevere, particularly now it's summer, as this season makes it slightly easier (for girls they can live in skirts and dresses, and for boys, they can run around in a vest and undies indoors). My ds is 2.6 and surprisingly potty training is proving easier than with my dd. Maybe it's because he's looking up to his sister, maybe it's just his temperament, but I'd certainly advocate for perseverance. You could start off with potty training just whilst you're indoors. Accidents are inevitable but they'll be easier to clean up and if you do it consistently for a few weeks, indoors, all the while encouraging, they'll soon get the idea of what the potty is and what they should be doing in it.

wouldn't like to advise on whether to go back to pants. However, I just wanted to say the nursery really should take him to the loo or remind him. With DS1 (total disaster with potty training) the nursery were great at reminding him or persuading him and he was actually 100% dry at nursery/school 2 years before he was at home!

Can I ask, those of you who went back to nappies, how did you talk to your dcs about it? Im worried about dd1 feeling like she's failed in some way if I do this, as she loves her pants and protests at wearing nappies even for her naps.

We're having the same problem here, dd1 2.11 is too good at holding it all in. She'll hop up and down and hold herself for hours, but if taken to the loo won't do anything, and only goes when it's started coming out and she can't hold on any longer.

With poos, she withheld for days to start with, had awful constipation and was sick. We've upped her squash and given her prunes etc, so she can't hold on for that long, and have finally got the constipation sorted, but she still only poos in her nappy at naptime or in her pants. She's obviously got the physical control needed, it's just that for some reason she doesn't really want to use the loo/potty. So maybe nappies for a few more months are the answer?

lukewarm - perhaps you could suggest that she ask for a nappy if she needs to go - or put a nappy in the potty (maybe one of those little travel potties) so that she feels a bit cosier. Blowing bubbles and/or a running tap may also help things along!

Thanks acebaby, I'll give those ideas a go. Feeling despondant tonight after yet another afternoon of her hopping around and slightly wetting her pants but not going, sigh.
