Should it click straightaway or can it take some time?

Hi, after some advice please! Started potty training DS just over a week ago, he's 3.1. He's aware of what potty/toilet is for etc, but we do seem to be having more accidents than success. Might be full on puddle on floor that almost takes him by surprise, or he might say potty to me, we get him on it and he wees, but has already done small wee in his pants which think must have alerted him.

A week in - is this generally normal as part of learning process, does he need more time, or is he just not getting it for whatever reason?

To be honest I think I'd like to persevere as I feel at 3.1 it's worth trying a bit longer in case something "clicks", and also because he's due to start a school nursery in Sept - and he has to be fully independent for that. I know legally they can't say they won't take him if he's not, but I can't see how it would work.

Help!

Every child is different when it comes to potty training - some do just click, others take a long time to get the hang of it.

I would persevere as you have started now, and it may confuse him if you stop. Plus you have only been going for a week - it may take several weeks of accidents, hopefully with decreasing regularity!

Wishing you lots of luck!

(Having said it will confuse him, when I had a really bad day of 5 accidents in an hour, I would pop a nappy on for a break!)

Thanks heymango. He's just not that interested in the whole process and is much too busy playing/chatting etc to want to stop and wee, it def catches him by surprise that way. Not sure how to try to explain to him though!
