How can I persuade my 3 year old to wear knickers?

My dd started wearing knickers at home last summer when she was just two. She couldn't manage poos but she could wear knickers for extended periods and always remember to pee in the potty. Last September I went into hospital to wait for ds to come and from that point onwards she has reverted to nappy wearing and although she sometimes does her wees and poos on the loo or potty and obviously knows how to she prefers to stick to old habits and refuses to wear knickers or to lose the toilet on a regular basis.

Until she was three I was relaxed about leaving it to her to decide when she was ready, just offering gentle encouragement now and then. I thought once summer came again she'd sort herself. But she's not, and now she's three I feel we ought to force the issue a bit.

Any thoughts/advice or tips?

Letting her choose her own knickers from the shop may help.

Done that, three times. We now have quite a collection!

What about ignoring it for a bit then trying peer pressure?

Ie go and visit someone else who is potty-trained. And talk about 'ooh, aren't they a big girl, dd!' Or invite someone round and have the potty in prominent position. My ds (nowhere near potty-trained) and his friend totally loved trying out each other's potties at the weekend!

(Dd got out of using the potty at night this way, when she saw that her friend used the big grown-up toilet at night-time and she wanted to as well)

The nappy fairy.

If she's physically ready, can do it, has done in the past and there are no other issues then removing the nappies means she can either go knickerless or wear her pants!

You might want to stay at home for a couple of days while she reacclimatises.

Great idea. We've thought of "running out of" nappies but maybe we could actually say the nappy fairy has been. Only prob is she has a baby brother whose nappies she can fit into at a squeeze, and I'm sure she'd suggest this...

You can let her try fitting into nappies that are too small - they'd leak horrifically though!

The great thing about the Nappy Fairy (or any kind of fairy) is that you haven't run out, they've been magically removed because she's such a big grown up girl and her nappies are needed somewhere else. You can make a big fuss about putting them out for the Nappy Fairy if you want to or you can matter-of-factly state that s/he came and took them away.

You could try a sticker chart? Everytime she uses the loo she gets a sticker to put on a chart or in a sticker book?

I was just wondering how you got on with the Nappy Fairy. We have a similar issue with our 32 month old daughter - she will happily use the potty but refuses to wear either training pants or normal pants. She will only wear nappies. She starts pre-school in about six weeks time so we are keen to get her into pants before then. We've tried pants with her favourite cartoon character, sticker charts, gentle persuasion and encouragement etc. I'm not sure that she would buy into the Nappy Fairy idea but was interested in your experience before we give it a go.
