I gave birth 4.5 months ago and am currently losing a scary amount of hair. Is this normal and is there anything I can do to prevent it?

Iirc in the run up the normal rate you lose your hair decreases so then it seems like you are losing more as that comes out too when your hormones re balance

I was terrified after my DD 7 was born as it was coming out in clumps and I was starting to go bald at my temples. A few months later it had stopped and then you have to deal with the nutty regrowth! But it's such a relief you'll be happy to have the weird tufts 😂

Silverbirchleaf · 11/08/2025 18:17

Yes, I had this.

TheBirdintheCave · 11/08/2025 18:17

Yeah I had this with my second. It’s all growing back now :)

Imisssleep2 · 11/08/2025 20:15

Completely normal, in pregnancy you hardly lose any, it hangs onto it, then it plays catch up and it is scary. I thought I was going to end up bald, but I never did, but I should have been the rate it was falling out lol

Yeah happened to me when my baby was first born then again now (8 months pp) it’s started falling out again. I’ve got loads of short hairs growing back now 🫤

Very comforted hearing all of your experiences

I had this with both mine, really bad hair loss around 2-6m postpartum. It was definitely not just the extra pregnancy growth being lost - i developed an extremely receding hairline. Then around 9 months both times it all grew back with a vengeance, I looked like a had a lion's mane because it initially grew back in gravity-defying tufts. It's back to being very thick now, my youngest is 1.5yo.

Just hang in there a few months and it'll grow back soon. Also, Alice bands!

I don't really remember with my 1st or 2nd. But with my 3rd my hair was the most beautiful it's been in years, I have quite a lot but it's quite fine hair (thanks Dad) I lost loads between 2-6 months.
I was hardly sleeping though and my body was a wreck. It does slowly start to come back to how it was pre pregnancy, it's just something you have to deal with. I actually got mine cut into a pixie and it looked loads healthier 😊

Ahh yes, the Gollum phase 😂
I had it, and it will pass 🥰

Lalu9025 · 12/08/2025 11:59

Same here. I have really thick hair and hair loss started about 1 month pp and at the 3-4 month mark was insane. Had to apologise to guests as despite vacuuming before they’d come over it would look like we hadn’t done so in months + every baby photo of my DS from this periods there’s a hair in it somewhere 😂🙈 6 months PP now and it’s more back to normal.

I also got a very flakey, quick to get oily scalp PP. That’s still with me but getting a little better too…

Me too, it took over a year for that to get back to normal for me but thankfully it just about has now. I went to get my haircut as a nice treat when my dc2 was 6mo - felt like the first proper pamper I'd had in ages - and the awful hairdresser was so faux-shocked and judgemental about it to try and flog me some kerastase. It really knocked my confidence and I'm still bitter about it! I'd told her I was postpartum and she was still scathing.

I've since found a much nicer salon, and my scalp is no longer flaky, so I should get over it haha.
