Baby is 1 Yr old and period has still not returned

Everyone else I know with breastfed babies has had a period back at abou 8 or 9 month so just want to check if I'm still in within 'normal'.
I'm breastfeeding but have cut back with weaning, baby now has milk in morning and before bed. Occasionally in afternoon if a bit poorly with teething. Baby does feed over night if he wakes up crying when teething( once or twice overnight, Occasionally more)

I had a little spotting last month but not enough to put a tampon or moon cup. This month I've been bloated and had some cramping feeling and had bowel changes as if period was due but nothing.
I've done a pregnacy test just incase which is negative.
I've lost weight since giving birth and breastfeeding and Occasionally get a bit dizzy although this has been getting better so in the back of mind I'm worries if I'm a bit anaemic or something which could be delaying period.
I'm obviously not in a hurry for it to return but I also feel like it would be nice to get back to normal body functions.
Would it be sensible to go to GP or when should I go I to GP if period still not back?
Just after other experiences as I said all other baby friends have periods even the ones who breastfeed baby more then me.

I bf two babies for 21 months each, both times my period came back at 17 months. I was quite happy without it!

It was when the night feeds dropped down that it came back for me.

HowDoYouSpellThat · 28/10/2024 06:38

It took a year for my period to return after my first son too. I remember thinking it was a long time but he fed a lot.

Testingthetimes · 28/10/2024 06:42

mine took 15 months to return 1st time. 12months the second. Breastfeeding as intensely both times.

I know a lot of friends who were similar or longer.

I do think a trip to the GP to check if you are anemic or need any other ‘boosting’ would be worth it. In my experience, women give so so much during pregnancy and those years after. And when they say they suspect they ‘might be anaemic’ or something it tends to a understatement and they most likely are. It’s hard to find the time for yourself, but your health is critical.

PeopleAreToads · 28/10/2024 06:43

Mine returned at about 11 months, which coincided with stopping night feeding

LifeD1lemma · 28/10/2024 06:48

Mine came back at 13 months both times. With DC1 I got my period on the day of his last ever feed - brutal! With DC2 I carried on feeding her until she was 18 months. I think it was cutting the night feeds that brought it back.

ayvasili · 28/10/2024 06:58

I got my period at 15.months post partum, feeding as you describe. Be careful though, after that first period I didn't get another and I found I was pregnant with my second! Oops!

Sailawaygirl · 28/10/2024 07:02

Thanks all.
@ayvasili that's what I'm worried about!
I was looking at my tummy in the bath and and thought oh that looks a bit of a bump. But I think it's just a food baby!

Very common for it to not come back for a year or more. Mine came back at 8 months first time, 12 months second but I know friends who haven’t got theirs back for much longer than that. Nothing to worry about

JaneGrint · 28/10/2024 07:09

I breastfed DC2 & DC3 for over 2 years, and both times I was around 13 - 14 months post partum when my periods returned.

Although if you think you may be anemic it’s worthwhile getting that checked out.

Hello!

yes, finally, at 22 months ☺️

RainingRoses · 01/04/2025 19:51

Exclusively breast fed both of mine. Both fed a lot day and night. Yet period came back at 4 months with my first and 3 months with my second. Was so annoyed!

AutumnScream · 01/04/2025 19:53

My periods came back 17 months later its normal! Ive known breastfeeding mothers to go up to 3 years without one!
