When Did You Get Your First Period After Having A Baby

I’m a FTM to a 5 month old and have been combination feeding from when he was born and have had no signs of my period yet. I’ve heard if you’re exclusively breastfeeding you may not have a period until you stop nursing but usually get it back within a couple of months if combination feeding. Should I be concerned or is it worth making a doctors appointment to discuss this?

For me it was four months, despite exclusively breastfeeding. I felt cheated! I didn't mind too much though as I wanted to have another baby quite quickly.

It's not worth a GP appointment in itself, I don't think. There's such a wide range of normal. If you read threads on here you'll see anything from six weeks to over two years. So I wouldn't worry.

One thing that can trigger ovulation is stopping breastfeeding at night, so if you're doing so it might be worth thinking about.

Literally 4 weeks after birth for me, and back to 28 day cycle ever since, now 4 months postpartum! And I am breastfeeding, thought I’d get at least a few months off but sadly not🥲

Christwosheds · 09/08/2024 19:43

12 months each time. I dropped one feed then and that triggered it I think (exclusively breast fed, but obviously on solids too after six months).

grubblyplank · 09/08/2024 19:47

5 weeks with both of mine-exclusively breastfed both of them Confused

TyneTeas · 09/08/2024 19:53

Exactly four weeks after stopping breastfeeding

polkadotpixie · 09/08/2024 20:19

26 days after birth, straight back to my 26 day cycle. I didn't breastfeed though

NorthernDancer · 09/08/2024 20:39

4 weeks both times, despite EBF.

maaama · 09/08/2024 20:51

With my first it was 5 months, second was 6 weeks, ebf both for the same amount of time

Sausagedog101 · 09/08/2024 20:52

Hello, I combination fed my first until 3 months when I stopped. First period came 8 weeks later, so around 5 months.

Second time around I bottle fed from birth and period came at 4 months.

It's totally individual - I used to get worried mine didn't come sooner when I combination fed (as nhs website says 4-6 weeks or similar...) so I ended up posting on Facebook and many women were also similar to me!

peonyjam · 09/08/2024 20:54

EBF baby and 6 months almost to the day.

Newbie232 · 09/08/2024 20:58

after 6-8weeks PP despite exclusively breastfeeding. I ended up getting pregnant so quick actually 😭 happy now that it's happened but I was so naive at the time.

Yogaandcrochet · 09/08/2024 21:01

I exclusively breastfed, with lots of night feeds, and period returned at 22 months.

Roarasaurus · 09/08/2024 21:06

12 months after birth, ebf baby until solids at 6mo.

dbeuowlxb173939 · 09/08/2024 21:30

Both times mine didn't come back until I was down to one breast feed a day

Same here not only for me, but both of my sisters too - all EBFing

Overlyanxious · 09/08/2024 21:34

@Cloud9xo I combi fed, but mainly breast fed and I got my period a month after I stopped breast feeding.

ElsaLion · 09/08/2024 21:39

8 months after birth of DC1 (exclusively breastfed until 6 months, combi-fed alongside solids thereafter), whereas 12 months after DC2 (same pattern again). Now expecting DC3, so will it be interesting to see how soon they return this time.

Blackheathmumhere · 09/08/2024 21:42

18m for me. I had to basically stop breastfeeding for it to return (we wanted baby #2!)

zebranotzeebra · 09/08/2024 21:43

15 months for me, when she finally started sleeping 6 hour stretches at night

dimsumfatsum · 09/08/2024 21:44

6 weeks for me. I was massively pissed off.

dimsumfatsum · 09/08/2024 21:45

I exclusively BF too.

Moveoverdarlin · 09/08/2024 21:46

12 months and about 7 months with my second.

soberfabulous · 09/08/2024 22:28

5 weeks after birth, I couldn't believe it: so heavy I rang 111 as I thought it was some bizarre birth related hemorrhage . Truly incredible.

underhedges · 10/08/2024 18:59

11.5 months first time round, 17 months with dc2. Ebf both and carried on bf after cycle returned.

Hermanfromguesswho · 10/08/2024 19:20

Nearly a year for me all 3 times, even the ones I bottle fed!
