First period after birth - is this normal?

Hi
my DS is currently 14 weeks old. He is EBF. I thought it may be a little longer until my period returned but ohhh no started yesterday.

it has really knocked me for six. I had headaches for 3 days leading up to it ( I suffer with migraines and headaches generally but not for days in a row), it’s really heavy and seems to have bigger clots than what it would pre baby. I’m also massively bloated, I looked in the mirror and looked like I was pregnant again! Is it normal for periods to be like this? Lots of people told me they get easier after having a baby but this much worse

I couldn't say if it was normal, as mine didn't come back for a year. However post birth my periods are much worse than they used to be- awful pmt and bigger clots. Wish they had got better!

It's early but normal. I was EBF and mine came back after four months. I felt cheated, tbf. I thought I'd get a lot longer. I think the first one was heavier than normal but it improved after that.

There's a wide range in when periods come back after birth when EBF, anything from six weeks to until breastfeeding stops.

On the plus side, it means if you want to get pregnant again you can - I conceived again when DS1 was seven months but that's what I wanted. Just a bit of advice, make sure your contraception is watertight as you can be very fertile soon after giving birth.

Post natal periods are famous for being abnormal, especially if you are breastfeeding. Hopefully they will calm down for you in a few months.
