Worried about post partum hair loss

I’ve been losing massive clumps of hair each time I wash it and it has thinned a lot, to the point where I lift hair there are almost bald sections.

the texture has also changed where it becomes easily knitted and matted.

Im getting a bit worried as I’m just over 4 months post partum which I’ve read is meant to be the peak? Should it be calming down now?

I’ve been used silk pillowcase, silk scrunchies, washing hair 1-2 times a week, have had a hair cut.

Is anyone able to offer any advice please?

Hi Op, sorry you’re struggling with this. I really struggled with the hair loss too, and the texture change to really wirey. If I’m honest mine has only just about a month ago stopped falling out in such quantities, which coincided with my period returning. I am still ebf but I don’t know whether something shifted hormone wise as it’s now back to the ordinary amount of loss from pre pregnancy. It might be worth speaking to your gp to have your hormone levels checked and possibly thyroid too?

I panicked about this badly after having dd. I had a receding hairline worse than Richard E Grant!

But it all started to grow back around 9mo post partum. It will for you too, hang in there, it takes ages but it will come back

I’m 2.5 years on and it’s only starting to go back to normal. Very flyaway and prone to braking still though.

My personal advice is don't bother with silk stuff (except what sparks joy anyway). There's nothing you can do but wait.

I just wore Alice bands for a few months till it came back. As lush as ever. Give it 9mo op.

It definitely took more than 4 months for my hair loss to calm down. I also had bald patches. Have you looked into hair growth shampoos? I invested in Nioxin and I feel like it slowly helped my hair. PP sucks. I’m 2 years PP and my awkward bits around the face are STILL growing out!!!

I really struggled with this and really got me down. Mine calmed down from about 6 months, my baby is now 7 months and the fall out is back to normal I'd say.
Now I'm left with the dodgy re-growth! x

Just to add to the above I am now 9 months pp and so it seems to tie in with what some of the other posters have said above

Thanks everyone - my period hasn’t returned yet so maybe that’s something to do with it.

I have got a hair growth serum but not sure how well it will work!

sounds like 9 months is the turning point!

My hair loss was pretty bad, had bald patches all around the hairline. I wore wide fabric hair bands for months. All back to normal now. Make sure you're taking a decent vitamin supplement, it might help.

Cas112 · 08/12/2023 09:10

It's not meant to be the peak at 4 months. It can happen anywhere in the first 12months

Just wait it out. Take some supplements, it will grow back eventually.

I’ve been taking biotin for nearly 2yrs now! Are there any other supplements you recommend?
