Feeling quite down about this. I’m expressing milk for DD (5 weeks Tuesday) and am doing this very regularly but my period is back Sad

I expressed milk for DS who is now two and a half and my periods only returned when I stopped this so feeling a bit confused and depressed!

It’s just the way it is, no need to feel depressed.

Summermeadowflowers · 20/08/2023 07:21

I don’t think it’s common for periods to return this early if breastfeeding.

Not common, but it happens.

USaYwHatNow · 20/08/2023 07:24

Do you have quite troublesome periods usually? I was surprised as my period came back exactly 6 months postnatal, despite me EBF as my baby wouldn't wean/touch food til he was about 8 months. Still regularly BF on top of food and my periods are back in full force. It's just one of those things, some women's periods come back earlier that others.

Summermeadowflowers · 20/08/2023 07:31

I don’t normally @USaYwHatNow , normally pretty regular. It just feels a bit strange.

Mine didn’t come back until I stopped BF dd1 at about 12 months, with dd2 I got pregnant almost immediately because I assumed the same thing would happen. With dc3 born just 11 months later my periods came back after about a month even though I was breast feeding again. You don’t get the same response each time.

Mine came back with my first at 8 weeks. Always regular. Exclusively breastfeeding. Sorry OP. (Got to 7 months with my second though.)

Givemepickles · 20/08/2023 08:03

Mine came back at 6 weeks postpartum. I was also EBF. It sucks but it is what it is unfortunately.

MummyJ36 · 20/08/2023 08:06

Ah OP sorry that sucks. I’m pretty regular with my period normally and it came back pretty quickly after both DC’s. Second time around I was bottle feeding so obvs a lot quicker but even first time around I EBF for 3 months and it came within that time.

If you have any concerns or it doesn’t feel right do speak to your midwife or GP though.

The only guarantee is do not depend on BFing for contraception!

I did 50/50 BF/FF from first week and no night feeds after 8 weeks and didn't get periods back until 11 months.

Meanwhile a friend who EBF round the clock got pregnant again at 6 weeks pp much to her horror! She now has two kids in the same school year...

Littlebean13 · 20/08/2023 08:21

I’m EBF and mine came back at 3months pp. I was really annoyed about it if I’m being honest! I wasn’t expecting them to come back so quickly, especially as I was still feeding plenty during the night.

Summermeadowflowers · 20/08/2023 09:31

I’m not thinking about contraception as DH is never coming near me again joke sort of I think just because I’m not breastfeeding ‘normally’ it felt like a reminder. But of course it isn’t. I don’t want to share misery but glad it isn’t just me!

My periods returned at around then too but then they disappeared again, then came back.. then disappeared again

My point being, just because you have you're period now doesn't mean it'll be a regular thing!

Keep going, sounds like you're doing beautifully

RedRobyn2021 · 20/08/2023 12:33

I also want to add, I breastfed by DD exclusively until I introduced food at 6 months and she's now 2.5 and still feeds twice a day. She's never had or needed formula, so please don't think this is a reflection of your supply because it absolutely isn't x
