Long and irregular periods after baby

Hoping for any advice - I had a baby 7 months ago, I have been formula feeding so periods returned after 8 weeks. First one was very very heavy so went for an ultrasound to check for any retained products - all clear. Then had 4 regular ones until the last one, I started bleeding on day 12 of my cycle, that was 2 weeks ago and it hasn't stopped! I thought it was ending a few days ago but today it's heavy again.

GP is sending me for another scan but thinks it's just hormones not settled after giving birth. But why would it be unsettled now after 5 settled months?! And why the bleeding for weeks on end?! Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi I have had similar issues to you. I had my baby in October and bled for about 6 weeks afterwards. The blood did stop for a while but I had lots of mucous which looked like fertile mucous? I then started bleeding lightly in February (pink tinges and some brown blood) and since the end of February until now I have bled lots and it always seems to be worse when I have sat down and get up again or when I go to the toilet. It’s been red blood like this since last Monday so 11 day’s now and no sign of easing off yet. I have PCOS as well so I’ve been told it could be a cyst that’s causing the issue or to do with my hormones being out of sync since giving birth. I’m booked in for an ultrasound scan but no appointment received yet and have been waiting for nearly 2 weeks. Have you been diagnosed with anything such as PCOS? Or it could just simply be your hormones settling back to normal. Did you have a traumatic birth or anything such as the use of forceps or a caesarean? I had a forceps delivery as my baby was a big baby and was stuck so I’m not even sure if there’s been some
damage caused up there.

Firstly I’m sorry that you have also experienced this, it is not nice at all and it can make you feel quite poorly with it too especially if you’re losing blood for a long period of time as it can cause anaemia which it did in my case. I have finally stopped bleeding (about 3 or 4 day’s ago) but I bled every day from the middle of February so all in all it was for about 8 weeks of continuous bleed. So I had an ultrasound scan done first where my endometrium was showing as 16mm and they said there was an area of abnormal looking cells. I then went to a gynaecology appointment and I had a pipelle biopsy done which took some of the cells from my womb which all came back as normal? So I’ve never been actually diagnosed with anything as such? The doctor has now prescribed me with the pill which is meant to help with the bleeding and I am on a progesterone only pill due to having low levels of progesterone and PCOS. I have also read that taking progesterone can sometimes help to regulate endometrial hyperplasia which is thickening of the womb lining but what I will do in my case is ask the hospital for a follow up appointment in 3 months to check whether this has regulated back to a normal level. I am still none the wiser and the hospital don’t seem too concerned but all I would say is definitely push for an appointment if it continues so that they can hopefully give you some answers and it’s best to go as early as you can so that you can get some treatment for the constant bleeding (you could try tranexamic acid as this can sometimes help to stop blood loss but in my case it didn’t work but it does help for others). You may find that it will just stop on its own as it could be your hormone levels being out of sync and that the lining of the uterus has more to shed since being pregnant and not having a regular period? I hope that it gets better for you, I’ll let you know if and when I do hear what the actual cause of mine was but I’ve read online that sometimes doctors never manage to find out the causes of bleeding for many. Good luck and if the bleeding continues definitely take some iron supplements so that this will help you from becoming anaemic too. Hope this helps and let me know how you get on
