first period after birth?

DD is a month old and I had intense PMS type cramping and very light red bleeding yesterday. Could this be a super light first period? Would love to hear others' experiences

This can depend on whether you’re BFing or not.

I had about the same when I was BFing, my periods didn’t actually return to their normal selves though we ended up pregnant before they did, it was like you describe a little bit every few weeks ish (more than monthly).

It could be a period for sure, though I was still experiencing some very light postpartum bleeding at a month old. You can talk to the health visitor for her insight probably!
I was also exclusively breastfeeding and my real period came back at about 3 months (unfortunately 😂).

@FTEngineerM yep I'm bf'ing all day apart from giving her expressed milk at night. Good to hear your experience - I hope mine go back to normal! Were you feeding night and day?

No periods for 9 months with both of mine, was breastfeeding both times.
i bled on and off for about 6 weeks after birth. it would 'stop' then id have a couple of active days and it would all start up again.

FTEngineerM · 31/08/2021 21:35

Yes I was feeding day and night at that point, are you pumping at night?

ttcwithpcos1 · 01/09/2021 16:03

@loafcake yes the only thing that made me think it might be my period is the return of red bleeding (although still tiny amounts) plus the PMS cramps! But it could be pp bleeding as well...will have to wait until 6 week check

@DaisyChainsForever I was like this with my first, ebf as well and I don't remember exactly but think it came back when I went back to work or shortly after, DS started sleeping through at the same time as well and I tried pumping but milk dried up naturally at that point, around 9 months as well. So this is new for me

@FTEngineerM ah ok, I'm pumping in the day so have an 8-to-10 hour break overnight, which I heard could make it come back faster, so not sure

Yep, you’re right, the prolactin hormone is highest at night.

3 months after birth mine came back. Before, I sufferered horrendous pain and cramping, to the point I felt physically sick.

Now, the pain is minimal but my moods are awful Sad
