Doctor says it's fine but I'm worried

My 5 day old has gone from being clingy, crying if I put her down, hungry, waking up all the time, not able to be put down...to sleeping all day and all night literally. She won't wake up unless I pick her up, she does eat but only because I force it and she constantly falls asleep in the middle.

I took her to A&E and they said her observations were all normal, temperature, heart rate etc. She cried when they undressed her and she had the normal number of dirty nappies so they said she was active and normal.

But we're back home and instead of screaming to be picked up I just put her straight in the crib and she was asleep. Yes she CAN be woken/made to cry but only for a second and then she falls asleep again. It's really worrying me.

I don't know who else to go to though.

Hopefully your baby is fine but I totally understand your worries. Where are you based? Can you reach out to a community midwife or health visitor for advice?

Chwaraeteg · 03/08/2021 20:22

Ok, I have zero medical training but I don't think this sounds right. Could you phone the postnatal ward or birthing unit you were at and speak to them? Was it a neonatal DR you saw at A&E? I think if your instincts are tellimg yoy something is wrong you should push to be seen again. Good luck.

How many days was she clingy for and how many days has she been sleepy? How is she feeding?

I would go back @georgarina, babies can turn very quickly. You could ask for a second doctor’s opinion, or ask to be seen by a paediatrician if that wasn’t the first doctor’s specialism. After reading Annabel Karmel’s story (though that was decades ago) I wouldn’t ignore gut feeling. 5 days you’ll still be under midwife care, try calling fetal assessment unit and see what the midwife’s advice on phone is?

I agree I wouldn't feel ok about the sudden change.
Hope your baby is ok

It would be unusual for a baby to be like that, you’re right to question it ❤️

As PP said, midwife? HV? Your local GP?

Thanks all, she did wake up this afternoon and has been back to normal. The health visitor was happy and I'm happy that she's hungry and crying again! The early days are so nervewracking.
