When did your period start after having a baby?

I had my baby 10 weeks ago and I am EBF. I've just noticed I'm bleeding like a period! I stopped bleeding after 4 weeks of giving birth so I'm sure it's nothing to do with that. When did your period return? Especially if you was or are breastfeeding? I thought I'd have months without a period!

7 months both times.

MrsBlobby43 · 21/08/2020 17:57

Exactly 28 days each time and I was breast feeding Sad

Cyw2018 · 21/08/2020 17:59

13 months. EBF to 6 months then fed on demand after that.

Breastfeeding often keeps periods away if your baby isn't having a dummy, is still waking up overnight and is being fed on demand. The average time for them to return is 15 months postpartum. However, so mums get them straight away and others not for years. You might not ovulate every cycle though and an anovulatory cycle is more likely the sooner after giving birth you are.

How do you feel? Has it affected breastfeeding at all? Some mums find their milk drops temporarily for 24 hours or so at ovulation and again with their period. It bounces back though afterwards!

Around 13 months with DC1, 7ish months with DC2. DC1 coincided with them dropping night feeds DC2 with them virtually losing all interest in breastfeeding overnight.

7 weeks and I breastfed 🙄 I couldn't believe it

Roomba · 21/08/2020 18:03

I was lucky - breastfed DS1 for 23 months and period returned 4 weeks after I stopped bf him. DS2 I bf for almost 4 years and it was another six months before my periods returned. I had been referred for investigations to find out why they hadn't resumed, but they started regularly again before I got an appointment.

My mother always garbled that she intentionally bf my sister to avoid periods, after not bf me or my brother. But they returned like clockwork 6 weeks after giving birth, she wasn't best pleased Grin

chocolate26 · 21/08/2020 18:05

She has started sleeping 5-8 hour stretches at night and has done for the last 4 weeks ish so maybe that's why? She's also not drinking for as long at the moment and I've been worrying a bit about that. I feel emotional and teary like when I start my period but I really wasn't expecting it back this quickly!

With my son my period came back bang on 6 weeks pp. with my daughter it was 10 weeks. I was exclusively breastfeeding with both.

Wolfgirrl · 21/08/2020 18:11

Stopped bfing at 5 months, periods returned 6 weeks later.

farmertom · 21/08/2020 18:58

Like 6-8 weeks after first 😭 and four months after second EBF both. Some people are just unlucky.

However they did return sporadically for a while.

If you're worried though contact GP

16 weeks when bottle feeding my first, 20 weeks when breastfeeding my 2nd. Far too soon!

DCIRozHuntley · 21/08/2020 20:55

Oh, yes, that could be. I know the lactational ammenhorrhea method (of using breastfeeding to avoid pregnancy in the first 6 months post partum) needs quite strict rules to be followed, and it's advised to use another form of contraception if your baby sleeps more than a 5 hour stretch as ovulation becomes more likely.

Inthesky42 · 23/08/2020 08:49

3 months and I was EBF and feeding him at all hours! It's not fair!

Hellomoonstar · 23/08/2020 21:15

With ds1 two weeks after his first meal at 6months.

Ds2 4 weeks after postpartum bleeding stopped (I think it was due to the fact I was mainly pumping). He accepted drinking straight from the breast then af disappeared for further 8 months.

Ds3 I don’t know when it will return but he turns 4months tomorrow.

DramaAlpaca · 23/08/2020 21:16

Ebf and came back at three months.
