Lower back pain 5 months after birth

Hello all,

So I had a baby by c section back in early March . I haven't been able to sleep on my back ever since because I get lower back pain . I've been swimming again a few times now that the gyms have reopened and the breast stroke (my favourite) kills my lower back. I did a lot of breast stroke in the second and third trimester and never had any pain.

Has anyone else experienced this? Somebody told me it could be a result of the epidural which is quite a scary thought ..

Hi I have the same and also had a c section.

Have you checked your tummy muscles? My lower back pain is down to diastasis recti, I have 2 fingers gap between my abs which means whenever I carry my baby, swim etc it puts pressure on my back as my core can't support me as well as it used to. I've been doing exercises to try and close the gap but so far nothing has worked. I'm going to be speaking to my GP again soon. They referred me to a physio but what with covid etc I haven't actually seen any one. I'm now 8 months pp and it's not improving as obviously the weight that I'm lifting everyday is getting heavier!

Hi,

I don't have diastasis recti, I did check as two of the mothers from an NCT class I did have got it . Good luck with the physio. I've been told since writing this post that lower back pain is as common after pregnancy as pelvic floor problems! And it's all about strengthening the core again (which is hard after a c section). Hopefully your baby will start crawling around more and therefore need less carrying? Hope the back pain eases soon for both of us Smile

Another thing it could be is Sacroiliac joint dysfunction, I kept getting diagnosed with sciatica then eventually saw this ace physio who diagnosed SJP... Happens a lot in pregnancy apparently!

Oh I also have this after my c section! Thought it was just me... no advice unfortunately. I keep intending to start Pilates again but never manage to...
