Blocked milk duct remedy? Agony

Hi. So my right boob has a large hard lump in it, near the armpit. It's agony. It started around 3am when I did the night feed and noticed it felt a little hard despite a long feed. I've tried a hot flannel, massage, feeding and pumping. It doesn't seem to be getting better. Has anyone found anything else works?

Really worried about what will happen over night. My 6mo pretty consistently wakes once for a feed at 2/3am so I'll be going /5 hours between feeds/pumping. I have postnatal insomnia and barely slept last night so I really want to try an early night tonight but scared I'll make things worse Confused

The best thing you can do is keep pumping and feeding and massaging, if you can take a hot shower or bath and keep massaging and expressing. It hurts like hell but it will stop it developing any further with luck. Any hint of a temperature/ hot and cold flashes and sweats go straight to your doctors and they will give some antibiotics, you really don’t want mastitis, it’s crap. If you have a partner they might be able to help with the massaging if it’s a funny angle to get at under the armpit. Massage down towards the nip.
My daughter had a slight tongue tie and it stopped her feeding efficiently so I was constantly warding off mastitis when I got blocked up. I used a microwave beanbag as well to keep warmth on it but not too hot.

Have you got a powerful shower? Try using the hardest setting at a hot temp on the hard lump. The heat and pressure will help to loosen it.

Start taking Lecithin from the health food shop.

Also massage and feeding. I don't envy you OP, it's agony. Hope you can sort it soon.

Agree, keep feeding and pumping on that side, massaging the lump as you pump. Hot shower and try to hand express it out from that duct - you can find instructions on kellymom I think, or google how to hand express for a blockage.

These things happen even after 6 months, but check your latch on that side to make sure baby is well attached.

If it gets red and hot, you feel shivery or get a fever watch out for mastitis. Good luck!

Definitely try hand expressing from that duct, you'll need to squeeze/massage it with a hot flannel - hurts like hell but it works. You poor thing, I remember the agony! Flowers

I had this once and was advised to comb the area with a comb in the direction of the nipple. That did it. And hot bath etc

Pinkflipflop85 · 05/01/2020 18:34

Have you checked your nipple? I get big blockages whenever I have a milk bleb or blister. Probably not recommended... but I dig it out with my nail and it is instant relief (milk shoots out once it has gone!)

Bessiebigpants · 05/01/2020 19:43

Encourage baby to feed in odd positions if possible and really empty the breast if not try finishing with breast pump. Combing the lump helps too It's agony I remember it well

Feed, feed, feed.
Express, express, express.
Massage, massage, massage.
Heat, heat, heat.

LongLiveThePenis · 05/01/2020 20:02

Make a fist and press it against the blockage and push it in while twisting. If that makes sense.
Or, if you have a body massager, press that into the blockage on the highest setting. Work toward the nipple.

Hot shower and flannel and pumping with hot water bottle and flannel although careful not to burn yourself. I think it took about 24 hours to go for me so maybe call the GP in the morning if it hasn’t moved

GrumpyHoonMain · 05/01/2020 20:05

Expressing and hot showers / flannels worked for me.

pemberlyshades · 05/01/2020 20:16

Dangle feeding whilst massaging the duct always worked for me- you look hilarious/awful though but it does work! And yes to pp comments about checking for milk blebs. They can reform too.

georgialondon · 05/01/2020 20:46

Hot power shower 100%

attillathenun · 06/01/2020 18:39

Massaging in a really hot shower and pumping on all fours to get gravity to help out worked for me. Hope you get it shifted soon x
