Still breadtfeeding but think I'm getting my period

DD is 7 months old and is breastfed but not exclusively (DH does a formula dreamfeed at night). Ive had stomach cramps for last 4 days and it feels like my period is on its way. Am gutted that its coming back already. I was hoping to breastfeed for at least 12 months. Is there anything I can do? Will it affect my milk supply or does this mean the end of breastfeeding for me? With my DS it was 14 months before my period returned and that brought on the end of bf for me then. Thanks for any advice

U can have periods and breast feed..

Greatbigwhoooo · 14/03/2019 12:22

Why did your periods returning end breastfeeding your first baby? Did it severely affected your supply or trigger aversion or nursing strike?

JoinTheDots · 14/03/2019 12:39

Mine came back at 9 months with both my DDs, I fed them both beyond a year though, as period had no effect on milk supply or anything. I did love having 9 months off and was sad when AF returned, but such is life!

Queenfreak · 14/03/2019 12:42

My first period came when I was 6 weeks pp! Very very unfair.
Yes I do notice a dip in supply when I'm on, but my girl just feeds longer. I don't think that happens to everyone though.
I'm still feeding her at almost 2 years.
You don't have to stop.

Thanks everyone. Will put up with AF and hopefully keep on bf. From memory with DS 5 years ago he seemed to lose interest in bf at the same time as AF started again so maybe my supply dipped then. Am taking fenugreek and blessed thistle as my milk supply is not abundant

You've done well already not to get a period!

MulderitsmeX · 14/03/2019 21:31

Yes i heard it was a year but only 7 months for me and 2 for my friend!

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 14/03/2019 21:36

I don't understand why you think having periods means you need to stop breastfeeding - I've never heard of anyone thinking this before.
Breastfeeding generally means that it is longer after giving birth until periods resume, because of the hormone balance in your body, but there is no either/or involved.

astressedoutmum101 · 14/03/2019 21:38

I got my period back at 6 months and still breastfeeding my DD is one. they're just lighter and further apart but doesn't affect my supply

whitehalleve · 14/03/2019 21:40

Lucky you! I breastfed exclusively and my period came back 28 days after giving birth. It won't affect your supply at all. I breast fed for well over a year.

My periods started again at about 13 - 14 months with my breastfed babies.
Both babies continued to breastfeed past 2 yrs old, periods returning doesn’t necessarily mean the end of breastfeeding.

Nonibaloni · 14/03/2019 22:01

I assumed it was an old wives tale because I got my period 4 weeks after giving birth. I was furious when I realised other people got a longer break. Breastfed fine though.

Matilda1981 · 14/03/2019 22:01

I’m breastfeeding dd3 (6 months old) and I’ve had two periods already, due another one next week!!

Wallabyone · 14/03/2019 22:36

With my middle, dummy-refusing child, I was period free until she was 18months, it was amazing! Carried on BF until 2yrs 7m. With my eldest it came back after 7 months. Since my third takes a dummy, I'm guessing it won't be long until it returns, but I plan on carrying on. Your baby will feed more regularly if supply dips, don't worry x

Passthecake30 · 14/03/2019 22:40

My periods came back at 13 months and I bf until 21 months. My supply was noticeably lower for a few days which I worried about, but dd persevered until she self weaned.

wishywashy6 · 14/03/2019 22:53

My periods returned with both mine around 6/7 months but they continued to bf well beyond a year.
Always noticed they were fussy while I was on though, think I read somewhere that it changes the taste of your milk while you're on which can make baby fuss a bit although I could have completely just made that up 😬
Only ever lasted a couple of days then they were back to guzzling again!

Greatbigwhoooo · 15/03/2019 06:48

It may just have been a coincidence that your first lost interest when you periods returned, but I guess now you know it’s not necessary to stop you can take steps to push on through any issues if you do want to carry on.

le42 · 15/03/2019 23:22

My period has come back 6 weeks PP I’m gutted... haven’t noticed any change in feeding.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 16/03/2019 07:45

My DF has BF 4 DC has has never gone more than 6 weeks before AF returned.

You'll be fine. Try not to stress about it as the stress could affect your supply more than the AF.

If you think your baby is getting frustrated at a feed, try a few breast compressions and see if that helps Smile
