Trying to introduce a bottle to a breastfed baby

Hi there

Baby is 4 weeks and is breastfeeding well but I would like my LO to get used to taking a bottle as well, bottle will be expressed milk. I've tried the advice on the internet;

Let Dad do it
Slow flow teet
Evenings when not too hungry

So far, LO just kind of plays with the bottle and won't suck from it. Has anyone tried anything else? I'm thinking I'll just do it myself instead of DH trying it as I have more time. Has anyone tried doing it themselves? Any tips?

Thanks

If LO really won’t go for a bottle (have you tried a couple of different types? Eg the Medela calma teat worked for DD when she had refused several others) one thing that worked for our friends (who had that issue) was to leave it a bit - closer to 10/12 weeks iirc - and get DH to feed with a doidy cup -www.jojomamanbebe.co.uk/doidy-cups-b3714.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIy-TJkqvB2gIV4bztCh0PJwAjEAQYCyABEgLj2vD_BwE - that worked well if mum went out but if she was around baby just refused. Good luck!!

Dh had success with MAM bottles (and dummy!)

Hi

Thanks, trying to get there before 10/12 weeks but if still in the same situation will try that suggestion. Luckily I have a MAM bottle here and a medela bottle as well as a couple of tommee tippee ones so will try each of those. And if no joy I'll head out the house and leave the DH to it. Fingers crossed. Thank you.

We started 1 bottle a day of expressed milk at 4 weeks
Once ds randomly took 2oz but every other time just plays with the bottle and will take no more than half An oz
He’s 14weeks now and I’m wondering when will he actually accept it ! We use mam bottles the others we tried he wouldn’t even try at all or didn’t like them

We had luck with the MAM ones too, with expressed milk. Mainly DH did those feedings, and to be honest sometimes ds just wasn't interested in the bottle and would bite/play with it instead. My sister's experience agrees with a pp that trying different brands was crucial -- in the end, her son would only take expressed milk from a cheap brand of bottles (none of the fancy 'like a real nipple' Hmm ones would do!).

My baby had a bottle of expressed milk from 4 weeks, pretty much everyone in my family had a go at feeding her, including me with no issues. We use TT bottles. :)
