Severe breast pain

Hi, looking for some support for my wife who I know spends a lot of time on this!

My wife is getting severe pain after feeding, not tingling or a squeeze etc. but pain that rocks her whole body and causes agony for a few minutes. She's had her latch checked, had thrush meds and also had a swab checked which confirmed she didn't have thrush but an infection and now is on antibiotics which are making no difference. She had similar with our second child and it was never resolved and she quit breast feeding.

Firstly, anyone had anything like this?

Secondly, I'm advising her that she can stop BF, that she shouldn't care if 'people judge' and it's madness she's going through this. It's making her miserable. Would be great to get some support for her from fellow mums.

Thanks!

Until some of the more experienced ladies reply, have you searched on here under breast feeding pain? There are a few previous posts that might help.

I'm not able to help myself, I gave up breast feeding sadly, but I hope you find the answers.

How long has she been on antibiotics?

Yes, I had it with dc2. Mastitis was the problem. So incredibly painful. Massage, hot compresses and assistance from the midwife. I remember I continued to breastfeed, somehow!

Any other symptoms? She might need different antibiotics to knock it on the head if it’s mastitis. Also was the thrush treatment a pill or a cream?

How long has she been breastfeeding for? I had intense pain from day 7 to day 17. It wasn't mastitis or thrush or tongue tie, but it did get better after day 17.

It was a hard achey shooting pain in my boob. It made me cry every feed and was more than toe curling it made me need to kick something to distract me from the pain.

Depending on how far along your wife is- if she's like me it might get better after 2 1/5 weeks. I hope so for her.

It's been 5 weeks now. The pain is after feeding as opposed to during the feed, and she thinks mastitis would be during?

She had pills for the thrush

Thrush is what it really sounds like. Is it like being stabbed repeatedly with a shard of glass after feeding? It’s possible the treatment didn’t work maybe, or that she was reinfected. Was she using a cream at the same time? When I had it I had the pill but was supposed to continuously use an external cream 3 times daily for 6 weeks. A second opinion might be in order here.

I’ve had mastitis too but that would be incredibly painful while feeding and she would likely have developed a fever.
