Struggling: episiotomy still sore after 8 weeks

The scar area is really achy, not mega sore or anything but feels really bruised.

The discomfort eased around 5weeks but for the past week has been getting worse again, to the point I feel as bad as I did at 2-3 weeks PP now.

The stitches have dissolved, and I'm healed so I'm really not sure what this ache is about. It's so bad I'm considering A&E or out of hours as even my butt check hurts tonight 😖

I've not had a period yet, but my PP bleed ended around week 4. I did have to take the morning after pill around a week ago... Could the hormones be affecting my scar? Or could my period be due as I've heard it can ache around the monthly time?

Someone help , I could actually cry right now.

Hi I had the same. you are still in the quite early stages of healing. I found that although it was healed and the stitches had gone, it still takes a while for the scar area to rebuild tissue, muscle and nerves. Hormones also take a while to regulate themselves again. Sorry but I found that the waiting game played a big part! If you are worried I would get it looked at

Really? I kept being told "6 weeks" was the magically healing point... Such a downer to reach that point and not be recovered. I've discovered that I could be PG again however so that could be making things worse.

I had problems with my healing (my stitches came out after 4 days) but it took me about 5-6 months to feel sort of normal! Everyone's is different though. Any doubt got get it checked. I ended up at the gyno

How's it feeling now OP? I have had an infection in my tears which was only picked up at 10 weeks so now at 13 weeks healing only just begun, and today it feels really achy and bruised like you said, the whole thing is ruining my life right now.

@OnNaturesCourse did you ever get to the bottom of what was causing your pain. I'm 8 weeks PP and having the exact same thing.
Iv not had pain since 2 weeks PP and now it feels like Iv been punched in the episiotomy

Growingwildthings · 21/05/2021 21:16

@rainbowMIT how are you going? Did your pain end up going away? I’ve had a really similar situation where no perineum pain from 3 weeks and now at 8 weeks I feel so swollen, bruised and sore!

rainbowMIT · 21/05/2021 21:57

@Growingwildthings

Never got to the bottom of it unfortunately :-(
From seeing numerous doctors & gynaecologists I had three courses of antibiotics after three episodes of hideous discharge. Every time the discharge came so did the ache/pain of episiotomy. All my swabs came back clear.

One thing that I did get removed twice was granulation scar tissue from the episiotomy. They said this could of been the issue but to be honest I'm not sure & neither are they.

I'm now coming up 10 months postpartum & things have only just started in the last few months going back to normal down there.

Hope your ok x

@rainbowMIT oh I’m so sorry to hear! Yeah unfortunately it seems for some mums it can take up to a year to recover, so I’m trying to brace myself for that - whilst also hoping so much to be better quicker. I’m not going great but am only 8 weeks so I’ll just try be patient. Glad though things are starting to get back to normal for you, hope it just keeps getting better xx

Hi all, 5 weeks post birth that needed an episiotomy and also got a 3B tear. I'm on 3rd course antibiotics and things are getting there healing wise, still got a raw area. The whole thing is just horrible and and have cried numerous times about it. Can only walk for a short time without it getting sore down there. Just want it to heal and feel normal again. I'm so scared of it not healing properly. I can't even think about the thought of having sex again and i'm nervous when having a poo. just so awful, wasn't prepared for this sort of thing pre birth. The healthcare professionals keep saying to give it time but it so hard not to worry

@DiabeticFirstBaby

I hear you. Honestly I was extremely impatient I ride horses and I never thought I'd be able to sit on one ever again!

10 months pp here & honestly you would never no I had an episiotomy despite how hideous it looked once.
Even going to the gynaecologist they ask which side my episiotomy is on because you can't see it.
Trust me when I say my down stairs looked horrendous postpartum even round to my anus!
And having a poo is hideous with tearing and episiotomy but it gets easier I promise. Keep loose 🙊

Sit back relax & enjoy those new born cuddles you will get there xx

@rainbowMIT
Thankyou, that makes me feel so much better, i know it's still early days but nice to hear things have healed so well for you abs i presume you are back riding again which at the min would seem impossible! x

Similar happened to me and being told the sixweek thing made me really disheartened as I just couldn’t understand what was wrong. I got checked and they couldn’t see any issues but I had a lot of pain. I had stopped doing all the things that are meant to help like the cooling pads and sprays ect so I began to use them again and it was funny they actually did help even though it was a few months on. I can tell you I’m fully back to normal now so things do tend to get better but for me it took ages!

rainbowMIT · 30/05/2021 18:12

@DiabeticFirstBaby yes back riding 🐎
I totally no how you feel. I remember thinking my riding career was long gone.
