My DS has a sore throat sounds hoarse and he grunts like he's trying to clear it sometimes, told midwife today. She didn't seem too concerned he's still feeding, peeing and pooing all fine and he hasn't been left crying for hrs the only thing I can think of is he gets hiccups a lot!! Any ideas?

Could be normal. Are there any allergies in your family?

VagueIdeas · 23/11/2015 21:57

Hiccups can be a sign of reflux. I wonder whether acid Is making him grunt and sound hoarse as well?

HopeFull28 · 23/11/2015 22:02

No allergies that I can think of but asthma runs in the family.. I thought reflux but he He's never sick I would have thought if he had acid he'd be throwing up Hmm

Is his chest heaving in and out a lot when he is breathing?
Is his breathing noisy (stridor)?
Does he sound a bit like a seal barking?

If the answer is yes to any of those he needs to be seen by a doctor tonight. I speak from experience.

Newlywed56 · 23/11/2015 22:23

I would then definitely go to the gp, I once mentioned to mine something that my midwife had dismissed (turns out she shouldn't have) and his reply was "midwives aren't medically trained" ... Did sound a bit harsh but to be honest although majority I encountered were great their main training is delivering babies safely so always worth getting a doctors opinion

What do u think it is bunbaker? Sometimes he breathes fast but not noisy

Thinking about it, an 11day old with noisy breathing etc- I would be straight to out of hours or children's hospital. You really wouldn't be wasting anyone's time and it would be so much better for them to tel to ou everythi

ChickadeeChick · 23/11/2015 23:04

I think out of hours too, just to be sure. He's so tiny and you can never be too careful. They'll rush you through you shouldn't have to sit and wait long. Hope you get on ok Smile

With DD it was because her airway was narrow. What does his chest look like while he is breathing? Is it moving a lot? You should at least call 111 for advice.

Bunbaker · 24/11/2015 19:50

How is your DS today Hopefull28?

Update : turns out DS has a cold looks like he's caught it off a relative who visited then came down with a cold the following day. He's much better now tho we have been using a vapour rub and his breathing has improved loads! Thanks for all ur advice I'm a ftm so everything is a worry
